The end of another busy week and International Human-Animal Bond Day! Over the last fortnight we have fostered 18 new animals at Refuge4Pets, to enable families to escape domestic abuse. Animals are such an important part of so many of our lives. But, for victim-survivors of domestic abuse animals often provide a unique source of companionship, comfort, love, escapism and purpose which the perpetrator denies. Sadly, perpetrators of domestic abuse will exploit the bond that victim-survivors have with animals to coerce, control and trap them in the abusive relationship. Animals experience physical, sexual and emotional abuse, are neglected, denied veterinary treatment and murdered by perpetrators. There are many parallels between how people and animals are abused. But, a human-centric approach dominates definitions and the public story about domestic abuse. This undermines the status and the importance of the animal in the context of the abuse. Victim-survivors will not leave if they cannot take their animals with them, which is why asking about animals and factoring animals into the safety plans for individuals/families impacted by domestic abuse is so important in terms of safeguarding and preventing homicide. Please keep your pets safe and review the following tips: * Pets can dehydrate quickly, so keep plenty of fresh, clean water available. * Make sure outside animals have access to shade and do not over exercise them. *Know the symptoms of overheating in pets: excessive panting, difficulty breathing, increased heart rate, drooling, mild weakness, stupor or even collapse. *Animal with flat faces such as Pugs, French Bulldogs and Persian cats are more susceptible to heat stroke. *Never leave your pet in a parked vehicle unattended, the temperature can become deadly within minutes. *Do not leave your pet unattended around a pool. *Dogs with shaved coats need to be protected from sunburn. *Do not let your dog linger on hot asphalt.
