What is the price of being DEI specialist within Higher Ed while also being a person from an oppressed group? The price is tokenization, burnout, gaslighting, and daily racism… Education should NEVER be privately owned. Donations should NEVER dictate how a college or university operates and financial transparency should be mandatory. While they profit off their silence when a genocide happens, more and more of us are harmed by a system made to propagate distopian systems of power. We need an education reform ASAP, and powered by PEOPLE. And being neurodivergent in higher ed? Loads of daily ableism and an absurd amount of energy apent trying to cope with an unsafe environment with little to no tolerance to dialogue about disabilities. #freepalestine #transparencyinhighered #divest

DC CHARITY SPOTLIGHT Teach For America D.C. Region Together with our community, they hope to ensure educational equity for all of our students so that they can work towards a brighter future for our region. Talent and potential are distributed equally across children, but opportunity is not. Today, 25 percent of D.C. children live in poverty—in a region that’s home to half of the top 10 wealthiest counties in the United States. With lifetime earnings closely linked to educational attainment, unequal access to an excellent education can give rise to entrenched poverty that lasts for generations. The path to an excellent education for every child starts with great teachers in classrooms and leaders working to create systemic change. Here at TFA D.C. Region, they work to develop leaders committed to ensuring all children reach their potential. Here, those disparities persist along lines of race and geography. Although they sit just a few miles apart, only 11 percent of schools in D.C.’s Ward 8, east of the Anacostia River, receive a 4- or 5-star rating on their school performance report cards compared to 100 percent of schools in affluent Ward 3. In Virginia, less than 40 percent of 4th graders test proficient in literacy, and black students score more than 10 percentage points behind their white peers on every standardized test. Today, more than 3,300 Teach for America alumni in our region help D.C. to be among the country's fastest-improving urban school districts. Join them—and us—as they reimagine what’s possible for our children. https://lnkd.in/grvm7b84 #dccharity #dcnonprofit #givedc #donatedc #volunteerdc #teachforamerica #teachforamericadc #education #teaching

While alarming statistics on chronic absenteeism in schools are easy to find, impactful interventions are rare. That’s where Newark’s youth come in. Through Newark Opportunity Youth Network, they've pioneered a youth-led conversation campaign that’s changing the game in educational reform. By engaging their peers in over 30 recorded small-group conversations around their lived experiences, these young leaders have built a model for meaningful educational change led by youth and powered by youth voices. To learn more about this game-changing initiative and what's coming next, check out our latest spotlight story below! #youthvoices #chronicabsenteeism

“Rise Up SF” Education Program to Support Children Facing Hardship The goal is to provide educational support for under-supported children in San Francisco to give them confidence and hope, and to help lift them up to better lives. (San Francisco) – Urban Angels SF is proud to launch its educational support program, Rise Up SF, benefitting children from families experiencing homelessness or living at the poverty level in San Francisco. Nearly half of the students in the City are not reading proficient, and 1 in 24 students come from families who do not have a steady, safe, and secure place to live. Phase one of the program is to provide high-impact one-on-one tutoring in reading to 100 K through 4th grade children. “Research shows that it is vitally important that they be reading-proficient by the time they finish 4th grade because if they aren’t, they may never catch up,” says Nelson Barry, Founder and President of Urban Angels SF. “Getting children to read at grade level helps them with comprehension in other subjects, boosts their confidence, reduces absenteeism, and improves emotional behavior in the classroom,” Barry added. Three groups of children are most vulnerable to falling behind in reading; those from homeless families, those from families that are traditionally underserved (black and brown), and those from families where English is a secondary language. The vast majority of children served by UASF meet all three of these criteria! Headquartered in Diamond Heights since 2015, Urban Angels SF relies on 50+ volunteers and caring donors to fulfill its mission of providing frontline aid to San Francisco men, women, and children. “Rise Up SF” is the latest addition to the organization’s mission. The program focuses on providing educational support strategically and effectively. One of Urban Angels SF’s core values is to be agents of change for under-supported children. Join the Movement for Girl Child Education We all agree that in order to make the nation great, every girl has to be educated. Even lately, the government has been running various campaigns like Beti Padhao, Beti Bachao, that straight out says, protect women by educating them. Considering this very important point, SERUDS has started special causes that shed light on various aspects that help poor girl students to get everything they need. 📣 We can’t talk about educational equity without decolonizing education. How can a system, historically designed and upheld by white people, be truly inclusive and prioritize the success of all? It cannot. Educational equity is action—creating or eliminating policies, systems, and practices, not providing kids with boxes in order to help them see a baseball game. This inaccurate image fosters deficit-model thinking and oversimplification of the systemic barriers certain students face due to institutional structures. Decolonizing education entails rebuilding a school system that serves the needs of all students, staff, and educators, tailored to each child's unique requirements. Every individual deserves an equitable opportunity and a quality education, regardless of ethnicity, location, or income. Without fundamental changes to our education system, success for every student will remain elusive. #educationalequity #qualityeducation #nonprofit #youthadvocacy

Voice of Slum was born out of a dream to uplift and empower children from the slums, a vision held deeply by Chandni Di At just 10 years old, Chandni began her journey while collecting garbage. Despite her difficult circumstances, she always had a passion for helping others. After completing her daily work, she would spend time with slum children, offering them a chance to escape the cycle of poverty through education. This selfless dedication planted the seeds of Voice of Slum. As time passed, Chandni's passion was fueled by the realization that the children she worked with were not only deprived of basic education but also of essential life skills. That’s when she decided to focus not only on academics but on skill-based education. Chandni knew that if these children could acquire skills, they could play a meaningful role in society and break free from the limitations imposed on them by their circumstances. This belief in the power of education to transform lives was the driving force behind Voice of Slum. Today, Voice of Slum stands as a beacon of hope for thousands of children. Every child who walks through the doors of this organization is given the opportunity to dream, learn, and grow. Chandni Di's vision has become a reality, not only in providing education but in empowering these children to take control of their future. . . . #empowering #voiceofslum #changelives #changemaker #positivechange #nonprofit #donatenow . . Delina Biniam, our valued former Organizing and Outreach Coordinator, discusses one the wins achieved this short legislative session, Fulfilling Funding for Early Literacy. 📚 In the 2023 legislative session, the Oregon legislature passed HB 3198 or the Early Literacy Success Initiative as a result of the disheartening data that shows that only 29% of fourth grade students are reading at grade level. The Early Literacy Success Initiative’s purpose is to: - Increase early literacy for youth from birth to third grade - Remove disparities and barriers - Provide more support and accessibility for parents who may want more literacy support for their children This bill was brought back this short session because the legislature still needed to approve the funding for some of the literacy support programs. The total funding approved this session through HB 3198 was $19.43M, with $9.43M going to the Department of Early Learning and Care to support their birth through five plan and $10M allocated to community and tribal grants. Applicants for the grants can start seeing these funds between now and June. We need your help to support future legislative advocacy in literacy, which will contribute to our ambitious goal of making Oregon a top 15 state for child well-being by 2030. 70 years ago today the U.S. Supreme Court struck down separate but equal schooling, ruling racial segregation in public schools unconstitutional. About a generation of students attended integrated schools, but now public schools are again mostly segregated. If the goal is to equip students with tools to adjust to life after school in more diverse workplaces, how do we find education equity? #Brownspromise is the mission of the non-profit #SouthernEducationFoundation. https://lnkd.in/e3j7rvcc
