The European Parliament has voted to adopt the compromise text on the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), bringing forward seismic changes for the packaging industry. The PPWR will transform the way packaging is made, used and disposed of - affecting all parts of the value chain. We're reducing our environmental footprint by applying green chemistry principles across R&D and manufacturing. Our efforts include cutting water and solvent usage, minimizing hazardous waste, and enhancing efficiency. In R&D, our parallel synthesis approach allows multiple reactions on a milligram scale, cutting down material use and scaling efficiency. Additionally, our Solvent Recovery System (SRS) at the manufacturing unit recovers solvents for dedicated products. There are many such examples... We are integrating sustainability from the early R&D stages to the execution of commercial processes, using our 'Greenness Index' to track and improve resource efficiency, water conservation, and waste reduction. Our annual Green Chemistry Awards recognize teams that excel in sustainable API and intermediate production. This year, we received numerous outstanding entries based on the Greenness Index. What a great first day at NPE, with lots of examples of innovative new developments. However, our materials world continues to see evolution in all areas. This is a tray on the #Bruckner stand made from recycled fibre which comes from a 99% water solution which is then dried. It has never been more important to understand the competitive landscape. After the first few months of this year, we have already faced new unexpected challenges. The loss of our dear colleague and friend, MMD, was a deep shock that affected us all greatly. His influence is lasting and his absence is noticeable. But it is also clear that the structures he created did and will help us a lot to continue to look ahead and grow even closer together, especially in Europe. Another major topic on the positive side is the upcoming PPWR regulation. When PPWR comes into force, producers must achieve specific recycling rates. Most likely there will not be enough recycled material available in the long term to meet the increasing demand. This particularly affects brands and companies that want to position themselves sustainably. It is therefore even more important to develop circular economy solutions now in order to be prepared for the shortage of raw materials. As we say: People look for a waste disposal company when they want to get rid of their materials, but they come to us when they want them back. 😉 It will be an exciting year, and these topics and challenges already show how important collaboration and a spirit of innovation are. And I am proud that, despite the difficulties, we are continuing to grow and improve every day. I look forward to shaping the future together with our entire team.
