Some encouraging reflections coming out of #COP29. "The clean-energy transition is happening and it is unstoppable because economic prosperity and tackling the climate crisis now point in the same direction." https://lnkd.in/eMqCmgdz

The UNFCCC insists it is the only legitimate body that can decide on climate finance goals. However, only the G20 can effectively decide how that goal is reached. IMHO, that paradox is allowing our world to burn #GlobalCarbonFeeAndDividendPetition https://lnkd.in/g--Jv9RX

The effects of climate change have come crashing into our living rooms in the 2020s. No country has been spared the accelerating severe impacts. But so far, multilateral processes have failed to roll back CO2 emissions in any significant way.
Low expectations for COP29, but multilateral processes must keep at it

Today marks the start of #COP29. With the transport sector now the largest source of emissions in some countries, acting to decarbonise transport has never been more important. With the right action, the world can see huge cuts to transport emissions by 2050. ITF - International Transport Forum has launched several reports on decarbonising transport to support decision-makers in setting ambitious action on transport at COP29: https://lnkd.in/eGry_nQi. What action do leaders need to take at COP to create sustainable, efficient transport?

COP29: As the Climate Crisis Intensifies, Trump and World Leaders Are Leaving the Stage The global consensus on tackling climate change is fragmenting at the very moment action is most needed, writes Mike Buckley in Byline Times. Even if the US cannot be relied upon for four years or longer the rest of the world needs to step up both emissions cuts and climate finance. That will mean working with a coalition of the willing https://lnkd.in/e_S6KZcZ

Day Three at COP29 was a powerful reminder of the stakes and the passion driving global climate action. Leaders from vulnerable nations shared their lived realities, demanding justice and immediate financial support to adapt and rebuild. With rising fossil fuel emissions and severe climate impacts, the urgency for meaningful action is clear. As Gaston Browne, Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, declared, "To those who bear the greatest responsibility, I say this: the time for moral responsibility is now - justice demands promises are enforced." From ambitious climate finance pledges to passionate youth voices, the world is watching to see if commitments will become real, transformative actions. This is a moment of truth—may these promises lead to tangible outcomes. https://lnkd.in/gq_v5DYv #FINNonCOP #FINNonCOP29 #COP29 #ClimateAction #ClimateJustice

As the Under2 Coalition General Assembly at #COP29Azerbaijan approaches, we’re eager to foster collaborative conversations and drive action among leaders. We’ll be there to showcase how subnational governments have a vital role to play in tackling climate change, as they have the scale and the means to shift the needle on climate. We need the highest level of ambition for our climate at this crucial time. We can prevent the worst impacts of climate change. But we have to act now. Our main priority areas include: ⭕️Pushing for stronger NDCs, developed with subnational governments, in time for the next deadline of February 2025. ⭕️Calling for effective and accessible climate finance, including through the new global goal (New Collective Quantified Goal) set to be agreed at COP29. ⭕️Demonstrating increased ambition on energy, transport, industry, food and methane emissions reduction. "Nothing agreed until everything agreed" The proposal to vote to adopt decisions is not new. It constitutes a chapter in the rules of procedure of the COP, see article 41 and 16. However, this provision of the rules of procedure relating to voting has never been adopted (this is the reason why decisions are taken by consensus - hence the expression "nothing agreed until everything agreed"). And I don't see how it could be because it will create a favorable breeding ground for geopolitics to slide into negotiation sessions. During climate negotiations, particularly during COPs, a consensus-based process ensures that all voices, particularly those from vulnerable countries, are heard, thereby promoting the inclusiveness and collaboration needed to address this global challenge.
