🌊 Today, June 8, is World Ocean Day! 🌊 The ocean covers over 70% of Earth’s surface, produces half our planet’s oxygen, and absorbs 30% of human-made CO2. It supports 3 billion people's livelihoods and employs around 200 million in ocean-related industries. However, human activities are causing significant harm: 🫧 Carbon emissions are leading to ocean warming, acidification, and oxygen loss. ⋆。˚ Coastal waters are deteriorating due to pollution and eutrophication. 🪸 90% of big fish populations are depleted, and half of all coral reefs are destroyed. The World Economic Forum brings together the Friends of Ocean Action, a coalition of global leaders working to protect the seas. Their initiatives include: ༄ Scaling blue carbon benefits through coordinated action with governments ༄ Strengthening and empowering local communities ༄ A global partnership for sustainable blue food value chains ༄ Supporting 1000 transformative Ocean Startups by 2030 👉 https://lnkd.in/e2ueDxSB The last 2 years have seen historic agreements: 𓇼 to commit to protect and restore 30% of the ocean and coastal areas by 2030 𓇼 to manage and protect Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) also widely known as the High Seas Treaty 𓇼 to end harmful fisheries subsidies 𓇼 to develop a Global Plastics Treaty 𓇼 to place the ocean in the main domain of UN Climate Conferences and as a priority of the G20 agenda through the Oceans 20 The Third UN Ocean Conference will open in one year from now in Nice. It is crucial to accelerate these efforts and attain the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal for the Ocean (SDG14). To achieve that unity of purpose, Friends of Ocean Action, co-chaired by the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for the Ocean, identified a set of key asks in the “Bring it All Together” challenge 👉 https://lnkd.in/exkgVge7

📌 Save the date for the first edition of the ‘Mediterranean Green Week’ organized by Union for the Mediterranean that will take place from 14th to 16th of May in Istanbul (Türkiye). The theme of the event -“Towards a greener and more resilient Mediterranean”- underlines the urgent need for collective action and a new ambition for regional and local cooperation to move towards a decarbonized, energy-efficient economy, mitigate and adapt to the effects of climate change, and safeguard the unique ecological diversity of the Mediterranean region. 🎯 This first edition of the UfM 'Mediterranean Green Week' on energy, environment and climate action aims to bring together governments, businesses, civil society, youth, scientists, and more to break down barriers and work collaboratively on climate, water, environment, soils, forests, biodiversity, seas, energy, and economic transition. 🌍 The Mediterranean is particularly affected by the environmental, energy and climate crisis. Within our region, the climate is warning 20% faster than global trends. The acceleration of climate change impacts has exacerbated the already critical situation of the Mediterranean basin, caused by population growth, rapid urbanization, declining biodiversity, changes in land use, as well as economic and social challenges. 📍 ASCAME’s commitment to sustainable transition is a priority in its 2024 Action Plan, aiming to position the Mediterranean region as a leader in climate-conscious economic development. This declaration will serve as a rallying call for members and the wider private sector to align their strategies with environmental stewardship. ASCAME’s commitment extends beyond regional borders, seeking to strengthen ties with other regions and continents by creating a global alliance for sustainable development. ▶ Find out more about ASCAME's commitment to a greener Mediterranean! 👉 https://n9.cl/1i69c8 #greenerMediterranean #Mediterranean #Mediterraneancooperation #medconnet #shapingthefutureoftheMediterranean #unitedbytheMediterranean #greeneconomy #blueeconomy #WeAreASCAME #ASCAMEprojects #ASCAMEactionplan2024

The Commonwealth members have adopted the Apia Commonwealth Ocean Declaration, which calls on all 56 Commonwealth nations to protect and restore the ocean in the face of severe climate change, pollution and impacts related to over-exploitation. The Commonwealth represents a third of the world’s population, and 49 of its 56 countries have a coastline with 25 nations being Small Island Developing States (SIDS). In alignment with the High Level Panel for a Sustainable Ocean Economy, the declaration highlights that sustainable use of the ocean requires responsible and effective ocean management of 100% of marine waters, and encourages the development and implementation of national Sustainable Ocean Plans. If the non-Ocean Panel coastal members of the Commonwealth join the 100% Alliance and commit to 100% sustainable management of coastal waters they would contribute an additional 7% of the world’s EEZ and 5% of the world’s coastline. https://lnkd.in/e-JBB5VG

The EU Climate Pact community in #Greece has a new EU Climate Pact Partner. Let’s meet we4all! 💠 we4all is a non profit environmental and humanitarian organization that started its action in #Greece after the fires of Mati in 2018. We4all is active in ecosystem restoration, forest protection, urban greening as well as educational and awareness initiatives for children and adults on climate and sustainable solutions. 🔹 But why did We4all applied to become an 𝗘𝗨 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗣𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗻𝗲𝗿? We believe in the power of coordinated and united action, we believe in partnerships and we have faith in the institutions of the European Commission to lead for positive change in the global environmental scene. It was therefore an honor for us to be considered and accepted as a partner. 🌐 What motivated We4all to take action to fight against climate change? Seeing our forests and ecosystems be destroyed by wildfires, seeing people neglect and disrespect nature, seeing biodiversity getting weaker by the year forced us to take action and become the change we wanted to see in our world, hoping to inspire others to do the same. What’s next? ➡️ We4all is organizing 𝗮𝗻 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗻 𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁 on the 𝟭𝘀𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗗𝗲𝗰𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿, in #Drafi Attica. This is only a symbolic event and a part of our major goal for this season, to plant 1 million trees. Everyone is welcome and details will follow on our social media accounts. #EUClimatePact, #MyWorldOurPlanet EU Environment and Climate Ioannis Iliopoulos, Diana Fagoudi, Evanthia Iliadi - Vagena
