Today is #SmallBusinessSaturday, and with the holiday season upon us, what better way to celebrate than with food and fiber from right here in Marin County? We recently reached out to local farmers and ranchers to see what special offerings they have planned to make the holidays memorable. Food security and food sovereignty allows all communities to thrive.
Preserving BC First Nations' food traditions is more than a passion; it's a mission to keep our rich cultural heritage alive. Jared "Qwustenuxun" Williams is at the forefront of this crucial endeavor, blending tradition with innovation by upgrading his smokehouse to include a commercial-quality kitchen. This significant step allows him to meet modern food safety standards while maintaining ancient food preservation techniques. Thanks to the Indigenous Food Security and Sovereignty Grant, Jared's vision is becoming a reality. This fund, aimed at strengthening Indigenous food systems and sovereignty, provided Jared with the necessary resources to break ground on a project that not only serves his community but also sets a precedent for sustainability and cultural preservation. Jared's long-term goal? To establish regulations that enable other First Nations to replicate this model, ensuring that traditional foodways not only survive but thrive. By providing dried fish to hospitals and elders, Jared is creating a blueprint for future generations to sustainably share and enjoy the bounty of their land. Let's celebrate the fusion of tradition and innovation, as we watch Jared pave the way for a future where BC First Nations' food traditions are not only remembered but actively integrated into our communities. #FoodSovereignty #IndigenousInnovation #bcfirstnations
