Porto Alegre's Flood: Soccer Fields, Supermodel, and Elon Musk Did you know that the asteroid that wiped out the dinosaurs was roughly the size of 10 soccer fields? I thought that was quite big until I learned that the flooded area in Porto Alegre, Brazil, is the size of 5,000 soccer fields. For my Dutch friends, imagine Amsterdam, Utrecht, Rotterdam, The Hague, and Eindhoven city centers all underwater. For my American friends, imagine the majority of all fast food restaurants in the entire USA under water, or Manhattan. So far, this devastating flood has impacted over 2 million people across 446 neighborhoods, and it keeps getting worse. 😔 - Over half a million people lost their homes and are displaced - Almost 100 thousand people lost their homes and are staying in provisional shelters - Over 10 thousand animals have been rescued but animal death count is unclear Supermodel Gisele Bündchen, who is from this region, summarizes it in a minute: https://lnkd.in/egSWPhzi Elon Musk is stepping up with free internet access through Starlink. But even without a billion-dollar fortune, you can still make a difference. Here's where you can donate: https://lnkd.in/eXe3fkGi Now, you might be thinking, "Another cause? Where does my money even go? Does it really help?” It's a valid concern. Here's how I approach it: 1. Set a donation budget based on how much you can comfortably give each year 2. Go with your gut; I choose emotionally what resonates with me and donate from this budget 3. Incorporate any cause into your daily life. For me, that means being mindful of climate change and animal welfare through my diet, not shopping from fast fashion brands, and adopting pets (instead of shopping). Our family has 5 dogs and 4 cats. Remember, money can be used as an instrument of change even if it does not feel tangible at the moment you are donating it. Guys, I know this social network is not intended for this type of post, but I would like a few minutes from you to address an extremely difficult situation that the state in which we live is going through. Last week the worst weather event we know of in our history began, practically the rain of 3-4 months fell in 3 days, there were more than 1,000mm of rain per m2 in some locations, today (6 days after the start of the event) we have approximately 1/3 of the entire state in precarious conditions. Real war scenario. One of the main rivers in the state (Rio Taquari with an average width of 300m) was 32m above the normal level, detail: this river cuts through two of the most affected cities and all this water goes down to the Guaíba, which bathes our capital. In fact, our capital, Porto Alegre, has 67% of its neighborhoods without water or electricity and Lake Guaíba, which bathes the city, has reached the highest elevation in history: 5.35m high. For Guaíba, the forecasts are not good at all, depending on the wind and weather conditions, at best, 10 days for the water in Guaíba to return to the level below the flood level (3m). The streets in the center of Porto Alegre are completely flooded and the water has nowhere to go. We have already recorded more than 70 deaths and hundreds of missing people. If that wasn't enough, the forecasts are not favorable at all, and that way, I would like you to publicize and do everything you can to help with the fundraising campaign that is active, I know that everyone, as much as possible, can help with something. Don't be scared by the amount raised so far, this is one of the main campaigns. Follow the link: https://lnkd.in/dqJaqaQ8 for non-Brazilian people, we have in this link the possibility to donate as well. If you need more details about the incident, feel free to Google about “Enchente RS”, look the videos and understand the actual moment. Tks in advance.

Rodrigo Torres, one of our amazing volunteers at the M4A Foundation, based in Porto Alegre, has been tirelessly working on the ground in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The state is grappling with severe floods that have impacted more than half of its cities, with some completely devastated. Hundreds of thousands have lost their homes, and the full extent of the damage is still unfolding. Despite facing personal challenges, he has been part of the rescue operations, helping those affected, and is now assembling a reconstruction project to provide free architectural projects and construction materials to those who have lost their homes. We, in New Zealand, understand this devastation all too well. Last year we faced Cyclone Gabrielle, the most significant weather event our country has seen this century. It reminded us that climate change is not a distant threat, but a present reality. This is a call to action. Let’s come together to support the people of Rio Grande do Sul. A trustworthy campaign has been organized by the local population to provide aid. Every contribution, no matter how small, can make a difference. You can donate here: https://lnkd.in/d5uBYsKA Let’s stand together in these challenging times and help rebuild the lives of those affected by these tragedies. Together, we can make a difference. #Match4Action #ClimateChange #CommunityResilience #DisasterRelief #RioGrandeDoSulFloods

'Entire cities in RS will have to change location', says researcher who warned of unpreparedness against rain I am shocked and immensely saddened by everything I am seeing. People who lost everything, their home, their business, and even their family and their lives. The saddest thing is that this whole tragedy could have been mitigated, scientists were warning about the imminent risk, based on the data, but we insisted on not listening and continuing with our routine lives. How long will we neglect science? When will we start thinking about the future (not so future) consequences of our actions? Help however and much you can, but look for reliable places to donate, organizations that will really provide what is needed at the moment. https://lnkd.in/gApTzZfM donate.shtml

Major flooding has recently devestated Rio Grande do Sul, the southernmost state in Brazil. I lived in southern Brazil for several years, so this news has hit really close to home. Porto Alegre has a population of 1.3 million people, and reports are saying that 80% of the population does not have running water. Every dollar you and I donate is worth 5 Brazilian Reais, which can go a long way in purchasing water, sanitary supplies, and other valuable materials to aid those are suffering. To put it into perspective, here are some of the things you can buy with $5 in southern Brazil: -15 liters of water (4 gallons) -17 bars of soap -5kg bag of rice (11 lbs) -16 rolls of toilet paper -16 tubes of toothpaste -80 pads -20 diapers Please consider donating to an organization that is assisting in relief efforts, whether that is your church, the charity listed in the post below, or another one of your choice. Every dollar counts. Força Brasil 🇧🇷 https://lnkd.in/g_dXYB3X
My heart is breaking for the South of Brazil. I don't want to share sadness but here is one of the heartbreaking interviews of a tired and worn out firefighter: "I had rescued 3 kids on my boat and one of the kids asked me to stop and pick up a floating doll..... it was a baby that had drowned. I can't do this any longer, I'm done for today. I need to go home." I'm not sure how much of the news is coming to the social media channels of those here in the US not connected to Brazil but we need to help. This is the worst flooding ever witnessed in Brazil. Entire cities have been lost. The governor of a city called Muçum, said, "Muçum doesn't exist anymore, it has been taken by the Taquari River." People have not only lost their lives, but those that survived have lost everything. Imagine muddy water up to the ceiling in your homes today and getting on top of the roof is your only solution. I'll share some video links in the comments (please watch) but besides sharing this post for more awareness and showing a way to donate, I feel helpless. It's all that comes up in my feeds. Flooded graveyards, where caskets are seen floating down roads. It's apocalyptic. PLEASE help with what you can. We are so blessed here in the USA. This seems to be a trustworthy campaign with many Brazilian celebrities donating as well and this is where I'll be donating but please find where is best for you. In the description, there are links for donations in USD, GBP, and EUR. God Bless the State of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil 🇧🇷 https://lnkd.in/dWBe2aAB

My home town and home State in Southern Brazil is under water, after unprecedented rainfall volume and really bad contigency methods and preparedness by the State’s government. The situation is still ongoing so most of the needed resources are in the form of food and clothes, water, medication, etc. but this State which is roughly the size of Spain and Portugal together will need a lot of help from all to rebuild the infrastructure lost to this (many roads and bridges damaged significantly, some beyond repair). Half a million people are said to be affected in some way or another, though these are very conservative estimates. Once more, the Global South taking the brunt of climate change. Please help in any way you can.
Are you outside of Brazil and want to donate to the victims of the rain and floods in RS? The State Government and Porto Alegre City Hall have activated channels to receive international donations. The aim is to raise funds that will be exclusively used to help people who are suffering from the environmental catastrophe that is hitting the state of Rio Grande do Sul. https://lnkd.in/d92Wpit5

Online fundraising to support the MTD (Workers for Rights Movement) of Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil) to take action in the historic flooding hitting the region – reminiscent of those that devastated New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina back in 2005. Our lifelong fellow activists, Lurdes Santin and Mauro Cruz, lost their car in the floods. This family's car has always been used as a means of serving the collective, at the service of the tasks of the Workers’ Movement and the community of the Belo Monte settlement in Eldorado do Sul, the agroecological fairs, the medical emergency services and so much more. Now that the floods are upon us, the tasks of these two invaluable comrades are to organize the solidarity kitchens, the volunteer work teams, the collection and distribution of food, the organization of donations and logistical support, both for the activists in the region and for the people affected by the floods in Eldorado do Sul, Canoas, Guaíba and Porto Alegre. We are thus aiming at supporting the replacement of this car, as part of a solidarity campaign that can't stop. So, we, friends, fellow activists, those of us furthest from the front line in the state of Rio Grande do Sul or close to it but with in better conditions, are in organic solidarity with the people we care for and especially the people who care for other people. That's why we're organizing this online fundraising. Let's take care of those who take care of the people in the floods in Southern Brazil! Donating any amount through international transfer with Wise or Revolut is easy and inexpensive, using the following Brazilian account information: Country: Brazil Currency: Brazilian Real Brazil Bank Number: 001 (Banco do Brasil) Branch Code: 3334 Account Number: 64947 Account Type: Checking Tax Registration Number (CPF): 764.230.269-04 First and Middle Names: Lurdes Marta Last Name: Santin As soon as we reach the target, we'll report on the amount we collectively raised and on the purchase of the car. Thank you in advance and let's keep going with the solidarity movement! #FloodsSouthernBrazil #ChuvasNoRS #SolidarityCampaign #CampanhaDeSolidariedade https://lnkd.in/dA9gy3tv

In light of recent events in Southern Brazil, I wanted to share some insights with my network. Due to El Niño, the region is experiencing a heat block, hindering the advancement of cold fronts. Here in São Paulo state, in Guarujá (about 1000km from the capital of Rio Grande do Sul, Porto Alegre), where I am located, it hasn't rained for weeks, with temperatures soaring above 35ºC even in autumn. However, amidst these challenges, there's a remarkable spirit of unity across Brazil. The Prefeitura Municipal de Guarujá City Hall has established a donation center to aid the victims of the floods in Rio Grande do Sul. Non-perishable food, bottled water, and personal hygiene products are being accepted at the Guarujá Social Solidarity Fund (FSS), offering support to those affected by this devastating natural disaster. The floods in Rio Grande do Sul have taken a toll, with over 83 lives lost and hundreds of families displaced. It's a reminder of the importance of community and support during trying times. Perhaps one of the most horrifying environmental tragedies in the history of Brazil. I encourage you to check out the before and after images to witness the impact firsthand https://lnkd.in/dqr4HPyK interessados em ajudar se em Guarujá: https://lnkd.in/dC-H_Wuy #BrazilFloods #Solidarity #enchentes #brasil #riograndedosul

An Inspiring Visit to Sansthanam Abhay Daanam Alongside my amazing teammates Sameeksha Bhargava and Manan Goyal, I recently had the incredible opportunity to visit Sansthanam Abhay Daanam, a charity trust in Delhi NCR that has been transforming lives and communities since 2016. Starting with a mission to care for injured birds and small animals, the organization has grown into a powerhouse of compassion and innovation, impacting countless lives. Here are some highlights from this inspiring visit: - Wildlife Rescue and Care: The trust operates a 24/7 animal rescue service with skilled veterinary doctors, paramedical staff, and three ambulances covering Delhi NCR. Their dedicated team provides critical care to injured birds and animals, making a tangible difference in wildlife welfare. - Education for All: They sponsor a school in Sunpura village, offering free, elite education across Bharat, ensuring holistic learning for underprivileged children. - Performance Evaluation: The organization measures success not just by numbers but by lives impacted be it through education, wildlife rescue, or sustainable agriculture. They track the number of rescues, community engagement in education programs, and adoption rates of eco-friendly practices. - Traditional and Spiritual Growth: The Gyan Dharam Gurukul focuses on traditional education, yoga, and meditation while fostering cultural preservation. Its eco-friendly mud construction highlights sustainable and cost-effective living practices. - Building Community Trust: Overcoming challenges during the pandemic, the trust has earned the community's confidence, showcasing the transformative power of their initiatives. - Sustainability Metrics: Their organic farm exemplifies sustainability by using zero pesticides, producing their own compost, and educating the community on eco-friendly practices. This experience has deepened my appreciation for the incredible impact non-profits can achieve with dedication and resilience. A heartfelt thank you to Dr Harpreet Kaur for her mentorship and guidance throughout this project. Together with my teammates, this visit has been a meaningful step in understanding the power of compassion-driven work. #NonProfitImpact #AnimalCare #Sustainability #EducationForAll #TraditionalValues #CommunityDevelopment #Gratitude

Hey all! I'd like to ask for your assistance with a crowd-raiser for one of my friends and ex-colleague, Ducival Moraes. As some of you might know, Rio Grande do Sul, the southernmost state of Brazil - and the state where I reside - has been hit by a calamity event of subsequent storms. Some cities have vanished entirely out of the map due to flooding. One of the affected cities is the capital of our state, Porto Alegre, where Ducival resides. Duci's home with his fianceé, as well as his in-laws house, was completely flooded due to the rains, and their insurance doesn't cover floods - resulting in the lost of everything they couldn't move out of both houses in time. As such, they're now looking into reacquiring furniture and all the needed home appliances to get their household running once the water drains down. I know this isn't the intent of Linkedin, but I'd appreciate if any of you were able to put forward some donations or to share this on your network. Think that each single USD provided will convert to more than 5 Reais (our currency), largely contributing to Duci's goal of rebuilding their place. The crowdraiser is in Portuguese since this wasn't even originally intended to go farther than our circle of friends, but I really would like to leverage the networking I've been doing over these last few years to help out one of my closest friends. If you can't donate, I'll also appreciate all sorts of engagement to try to bump this up - so please, share, comment, and send it to your friends that might be able to assist us a bit. Link to their crowd-raiser: https://lnkd.in/dk7dgQKM I'll post some news articles if you aren't in the loop of what has been happening here in the comments.
