🌊🐟 The The Wildlife Trusts National Marine Week 2024 kicks off this weekend! 🐬🦀 Here Sea-Changers we love any occasion to celebrate all things marine related, so this two week spectacular dedicated to our precious marine life is a big deal! National Marine Week is a fantastic opportunity to connect with the incredible diversity of our seas and take action to protect these vital ecosystems. Here are our top 5 reasons to get involved: 1. Protect Biodiversity: Our oceans are home to an astonishing array of species. By participating in Marine Week, you help raise awareness and support conservation efforts to protect this rich biodiversity. 2. 🌍🐘 Happy World Elephant Day 2024! 🐘🌍 Today, we celebrate the majestic giants of the animal kingdom: elephants. These incredible creatures are not only the largest land mammals but also play a vital role in their ecosystems, helping to shape the environment and support biodiversity. They’re intelligent. They’re family-oriented. They have great memories. They are capable of feeling a wide range of deep emotions, from intense grief to joy bordering on elation, as well as empathy and stunning self-awareness. They create complex, supportive societies much like our own. As we mark World Elephant Day, let's reflect on the importance of protecting these magnificent animals and their habitats. The world is worth believing in (a poem) Inspired by speakers SCOTLAND: The Big Picture #BigPictureConference in Perth, Scotland on 14th September 2024 We need a liveable planet Desiring and wanting it would be great too We need an ecosystem that’s healthy, functioning and complete With humanity coprospering alongside the woodlands, peatlands, wetlands and wildlife Because the world is worth believing in Many hold the burden of ecological grief Feeling demoralised, demotivated and unempowered by what they see Losing hope at the destruction of the landscape Even if losing hope is not where they want it to end and a world worth believing in is The key is remembering that if people don’t know something they won’t care about it And if they don’t care about something they won’t take action - they can’t They need to know, care and believe in the world and all its inhabitants With urgent action therefore needed to embed knowledge of natural history in schools In order for children to be able identify, know and care about the robins, bumblebees, cabbage white butterflies and nettles (that too large a percentage of children are unable to currently do) So they may know deep within their very being the world is worth believing in It’s time to know that landscapes don’t need to look like they do That its current form is a result of layers and layers of human intervention Conservation is needed not destruction Conservation, that however small the redemptive acts, reminds us that the world is worth believing in Don’t let the internet polarise views Instead let’s learn from others – both the do do this’s and the really don’t try this’s Remembering 95% of wildlife/human conflict management is really human / human conflict management because we forget we and the world are worth believing in We need to reverse the monochromatic and barren landscapes we created and let the wild back in We need to be proud of our woodlands, peatlands and wetlands once more Connect to and coprosper with nature not just coexist We must know in our hearts the world is worth believing in We need to restore the wee tree Not for it to survive only because its location is inaccessible to unpredated large herbivores We need people at the heart of the journey Supporting a functioning ecosystem Because the world is worth believing in Look to the place names for reminders of species once abundant Now simply ghosts of the past Look to the bracken for reminders of where woods once stood And remember the breadth of animals old Macdonald had on his farm Because even he knew the world was worth believing in Know we need WILDER places 'W'ork with what you’ve got 'I'dentify your place as part of nature 'L'ive life in community 'D'elve into the discomfort 'E'at real food, and 'R'est So we may know a WILDER world is worth believing in .... continued in comments due to word count restriction #rewilding #nature #poem

Did you know that a remarkable ❤️ two thirds ❤️ of ALL British species can be found in #Yorkshire? Somewhere between 40,000 - 45,000 different plants, birds, animals and other organisms. Nature recovery here in Yorkshire is therefore a crucial contribution to UK biodiversity as a whole. 🦋 🐌 🕷 💮 This is just one headline from State of Yorkshire's Nature report, released today. Led by Yorkshire Wildlife Trust and with vital contributions and data from British Trust for Ornithology, the Botanical Society of Britain and Ireland, Butterfly Conservation, the Yorkshire Naturalists’ Union and the thousands of individual members who record and report wildlife. For the first time, we have an accurate insight into how the whole of Yorkshire’s nature is faring – and, crucially where and what action is most needed to create healthier, resilient and more abundant landscapes. Like everywhere in the UK, Yorkshire has suffered significant losses over many years to the richness and diversity of our natural environment. We know how to turn that around, for everyone's benefit. With an increasing disconnect from our natural world, misconceptions and misinformation about the species we share our landscapes with often dominate our narratives. Understanding is the first step to rebuilding our relationship with the environment. In this video series, created in collaboration with the Rainmatter Foundation, we explore how communities across the country are learning to coexist with elephants, snakes, leopards, and more. In this episode, we examine the complex issue of human-elephant conflict in India. As shrinking habitats push these majestic creatures closer to human populations, conflicts have become more frequent. But there is still hope. Discover how organisations like the Nature Conservation Foundation (NCF), A Rocha India and Wildlife SOS are using innovative, tech-based solutions to reduce these conflicts and foster harmony. Sharing some news! Today I joined Zoological Society of London (ZSL) as Head of Corporate Partnerships to support ZSL’s work striving for a world where wildlife thrives - helping people and wildlife live better together. The world’s biggest challenges centre on consumption, conflict and climate change which are putting a huge amount of strain on our planet. There’s been a whopping 73% decline in the average size of monitored wildlife populations between 1970 and 2020. The 2024 Living Planet Index, compiled by ZSL scientists, evidences how habitats are declining - and that’s entirely on us. The message is clear – we are cutting away at the very foundations of life, but with urgent action and support we have the power to reverse this. The antidote to destruction is conservation. For nearly two hundred years ZSL has been working to restore wildlife across the world. To all our corporate partners I can't wait to meet you all and to start working together! And for anyone who wants to get into sustainability and conservation in a meaningful way, do drop me a line. It’s definitely something every organisation can support in some way.
