Many of us are best acquainted with our oceans from our perspective on the beach, where shorebirds, like the Wilson’s Plover, skitter about and Black Skimmers fly overhead, as illustrated here by Chris Vest. We can hardly imagine the vastness of the world's oceans, much less experience them as a seabird does, traveling thousands of miles over open water each year. But oceans are much more than the tiny slivers most of us experience at their edges. Oceans — from sandy beaches to deep-sea environments — are habitats. Are you involved in marine conservation, or work in the marine environment? 🌊 We’d value your input on our draft Marine Conservation Advice Packages for two new Marine Protected Areas in English waters. These are: 🐟 Wyre Lune Marine Conservation Zone – situated in Morecambe Bay off the Lancashire coast and provides critical habitat for smelt, a rare migratory fish once common in our waters. 🦈Orford Inshore Marine Conservation Zone – located 14km off the Suffolk coast and includes subtidal mixed sediments. These provide an important nursery and spawning area for many fish species including sand eels, and several shark species, foraging seabirds and harbour porpoise. Marine Conservation Zones protect typical, rare or declining habitats and species found in our seas. Together with other types of Marine Protected Areas they contribute to the National Site Network.
