Leadership… This is an incredible but harrowing interview demonstrating true moral leadership It brings out institutions which gave easy access to vile people and then tried to bury their actions particularly with the vulnerable Who continue to protect the institution rather than doing the right thing. The Gardai’s immediate response gives some hope but what about all those lay teachers, pupils etc who stood by? Those legal firms who support their current defence? In terms of action shouldn’t the Irish State consider radical action rather than embark on the usual long tribunal type approach- 1. Adopt a South African type Truth and Reconciliation Commission to compel and establish the truth about abuses, providing a platform for victims and perpetrators to share their stories and facilitate healing. 2. Expedite Legislative Changes to avoid current avoidance and protection of the institutions and people therein which perpetuated these crimes 3. If it was good enough for the banks establish a NAMA-Type Organisation to manage and potentially sequester church assets and data ensuring that the Church funds compensation schemes for victims, not the State which has funded previous redress These steps aim to ensure accountability and some form of justice for victims.

So figure this. If you fail to pay your bills in Ireland bad stuff happens, unless you’re the Catholic Church. Todays irish times reports- “Following an outcry when the inquiry report was published, the orders said they would pay another €350 million. But just €120 million has been paid. In other words, of the €1.25 billion, the orders have paid about €250 million. You’ve paid the rest. You’ve also paid €200 million in legal costs, which saw some solicitors’ firms net massive fees – including six which were paid more than €10 million each.”
