Don't post much on here but some people might be interested. In October I signed up for L'Etape du Tour de France, a chance to ride the route of stage 20 of this years Tour de France, 138km and 4600m of climbing, it's a tough challenge that requires proper preparation. The route and profile can be seen here: https://lnkd.in/eFe7TJpm One of my focuses was weight loss as Covid and some strong anti-inflamatories for a shoulder problem had pushed my weight up. It's hard to train for a 20km climb when you live in Hertfordshire so a lot of climbing has been on the indoor trainer, Rouvy has been great for this with a route that recreates the third climb of the day. I also used it when the weather was bad, my excuse being that riding through a wet January in the UK is not relevant training for Nice in July. as I train mostly on my own Strava has been usefull in tracking my progress, setting a fair few PBs for local segments, including my fastest ever 10m TT this week. At D day minus 10 my training is pretty much complete, will just keep the legs ticking over for the next week. For those who are interested, some numbers: am still 800g over my goal weight but not looking to lose anymore at the moment, but have dropped from 99kg to 86.5, total lost: 12.5kg, just under 2st. For comparison, I have lost over 1 and a half times the weight of my bike. Total distance ridden since I signed up in October: 3321km (2064miles), further than riding from Hitchin to Nice and back again. Total climbed: 42,250m (138,615ft), the same as riding from sea level to the top of Everest nearly five times. Hopefully this will be enough.

MONDAY'S MIND BENDER: FY = F50 End of 'EOFYS' sales in Australia. And the start of a new 'financial year' year. Is that tautology? Hmmmm, maybe. In Australia, it is indeed the start of a new FY. Allocations have been set, and new mountains are there to climb. However, the thought for this Monday's mind bender is not just about the new FY. It's also about F50. What's that?? Well, have you spotted the SailGP? It's the grand prix of sailing. With 50 foot catamarans that can fly through the water on foils. Hence called F50. I caught a bit of the crazy action from New York Harbour over the weekend. Check it out here: https://lnkd.in/gFMQdUsm And if you're like me, and didn't quite get the rules and scoring at first glance, then read on here: https://lnkd.in/g-6AdGDX The insight from all this? Take your new FY one race at a time, measure what matters most, accumulate your points, and you'll get to the top of your ladder. Wherever that may be. Go for it like a F50, and get up on those foils. Happy new FY #marketing #technology #innovation #business #strategy

Mostly my posts are about my work at Mazars (Mazars in Germany) but I think it’s good to show sometimes what people are doing besides their main job. A few months ago I started with Concept Runners. An initiative for motivating people to start or keep moving, running especially. An idea originated during the covid period, when people were stuck to their homes, in need for motivation to go out. I organised challenges and started a local running community called ‘Viaanse Lopers’. Not the best name for going international, so Concept Runners was born. The essention is in the name. Creating running concepts to make run more fun, motivation to go out 💪🏻 Today I started a new challenge, the U-Bahn challenge. A very simple idea, but with good visualisation a big motivator! Those challenges can be done individually but also in groups of friends or colleagues. Do you want to motivate your employees? Let me know, we sit down and see what fits in your organisation. ‘Could we virtually run to all our locations across Germany, or maybe Europe? Which team/departmenr/location wins?’ 😏🏃🏼
📢 „Bitte alle aussteigen“ - Today we do the U-Bahn Challenge in Munich! 🏃🏼A good motivation for every runner! How does it work? 1. Put your running clothes on 2. Choose your U-Bahn line or random stations 3. Go for your run (don’t forget to track your run with Strava) 4. Send us your run via WhatsApp or website 5. … be a little patient 6. Check your personal map 🥳 Are you or is your organisation interested in the challenge? Let us know. We will create personal pages, including leaderboards, where you can track the progress. Wanna challenge your friends or colleagues? Also not a problem! This challenge has been developed for Munich now, but let us know which city you live or work and we will create the challenge! Check www.conceptrunners.com for more information! We are here to motivate and make run fun!

I am very much afraid to have to tell you that France is viciously, viciously polluted. Swimming, it is, in noxious effluent. Brimming in barely breathable bacteria, and pea-soup fogs to atrophy your lungs. Poison present in clouds of toxicity, worse than Union Carbide on a bad day in Bhopal. You virtually need deep-sea diving equipment to venture across its borders. At least, that’s the conclusion you’d be justified in arriving at when studying France’s ZFEs—zones à faibles émissions, or feeble emissions zones. These are zones that are so immensely unhealthy, that you cannot drive a car whose engine uses power that hasn’t already emitted a heap of crap at a power station that is not situated there, but is far, far away in someone else’s (really dirty) back yard. https://lnkd.in/e6KdxEGW

THE NEXT STAGE … The #TourdeFrance. The world’s top cycle race and 2024 marks the 111th edition. So what’s it about? A lot of blokes in Lycra biking it around #France? Well, the Lycra bit is true and yes, France plays a key role but there’s a lot more going on. The race has 21 stages covering approximately 3,500 kilometres (that’s 2,200 miles in old money) through the Pyrenees and the Alps. A gruelling race! Like the markets, #LeTour is always #changing, always challenging, always evolving. The route changes each year and although ‘de France’ is a clue where it’s heading, it starts in different countries. This year it started in Florence, #Italy and will finish in Nice, France. For the first time, the race will not finish in Paris due to preparations for the 2024 Summer Olympics. Why am I telling you this? Well, just like the Tour de France, economic and market cycles have different starting points and no two routes are the same. Think about it. How did we get here? A global pandemic, wars, geopolitical tensions all over the place, an on/off recession, a 44-day Prime Minister, sticky inflation, high interest rates and a #GeneralElection. As exhausting for #investors as those 21 stages and 3,500 kilometres for #cyclists. But investors or cyclists, you don’t have to win every stage. A #yellowjersey is great but keep your eye on the long-term goal. This year Mark Cavendish won stage five, his 35th stage victory at the Tour de France, breaking the record of 34 wins by Eddy Merckx. But in 1990, three-time Tour de France winner Greg LeMond won the Tour without winning a single stage. So, what next? Moving to the next stage, the goal for cyclists and investors is the same: be ready; adjust when necessary; maintain the long view. Want to know more? Perhaps a café au lait? A tête-à-tête? 🚶♀️ 🚠 Hike Up. Gondola Down. Repeat. 🚶♀️ 🚠 Let's talk #ElevationEverest. 🗻 We didn't know the first thing about "Everesting" training until our friends Alex, Daniel, Kayla, and Paul reached out. But we certainly understand event strategy and are flattered to join the team. The first-ever event, The Half Everest, will take place on September 28, 2024, at Winter Park Resort t. Athletes can compete solo or as part of a relay team to climb half the elevation of Mt. Everest by hiking up the mountain, riding the gondola down, and repeating until they reach 14,516 ft. Celebrate in between laps and at the finish line with music, activities, and more at Base Camp. HIKE UP: Each lap up the mountain is ~1,500 ft of elevation gain and 1.9 miles long. GONDOLA DOWN: Once you reach the top, ride the gondola down to start your next lap or switch out with a team member. REPEAT: Teams and solo athletes will have 17 hours to climb the mountain a total of 10 times - accumulating 14,516 ft in elevation gain over 19 miles. Here's where it gets fun: I (Mike) opened my mouth and decided to enter a team. We have two spots left. Interested in joining? Our treat (and we consider our team quite recreational and non-competitive). Let us know in the comments if you'd like to join our relay team. After ChatGPT is done writing this post I'm going to ask it how to train for a Half-Everest. Learn more: Elevation Everest
