💡 Solid-state and Lithium Metal Batteries Chart of the Quarter 🧠 Key thought: Is the early commercial push for semi-solid-state batteries in the China domestic market a play for first mover advantage in manufacturing and supply chains? 🔋 NIO and IM Motors each put their first semi-solid-state powered EVs on sale in 2024, with first delivery of physical EVs expected in H1 2025 - but these technologies use traditional anode materials, rather than next-generation (silicon or lithium metal) anodes, limiting upside performance. 📈 Despite this, these battery packs have already shown great potential - with NIO live streaming a 1,000 km drive in December 2023 - and these companies and their battery providers, WeLion New Energy Technology and Qingtao Energy Development Group, have secured first mover advantage from a manufacturing and supply chain perspective. ⚖️ Ultimately, everything is a balance - and solid-state batteries are no different. These first movers will begin to establish supply chains, have the opportunity to begin optimising oxide solid electrolyte manufacturing on a GWh-scale, and get real-world feedback from their cells and packs. ⚡ Although limiting performance by using a traditional silicon-graphite composite anode is not the solid-state that has been promised, it could be a key stepping stone for the industry to answer questions that surround manufacturing feasibility - a key challenge to assessing mass market commercial viability. 🌍 And next-generation solid-state batteries using high energy density (silicon and lithium metal) anodes are coming - with innovators around the world pursuing demonstration facilities by 2026/27 and commercial EVs by the end of the decade. 💰 Cost remains a critical question - for mass market EV penetration, any emerging battery technology must compete with traditional lithium-ion on a $/kWh basis. LCE price and LFP battery price is dropping 📉 and is likely to remain low for a while. Datang Group's bidding result was out yesterday and we see USD90+ per kWh on system level. The low LFP ESS battery price leads to a lack of motivation for manufacturers to advance sodium-ion battery technology. That's been said, the industry is still interested in sodium-ion batteries and we now see non-Chinese players join the game. Report highlights battery industry trends Shenzhen-based GGII, an organization focusing on the lithium battery industry chain, recently released its 2024 Blue Book on the Development of China's Big Cylindrical Lithium Battery Industry. The report comprehensively reviews the industry's technical and technological breakthroughs and trends, and provides an analysis of the current market landscape and future development trends. Increasing demand for lithium batteries has led to the continued growth of cylindrical lithium battery shipments, the report noted. GGII expects that China's cylindrical lithium battery shipments will exceed 400 GWh by 2030, with a compound growth rate of over 50.1 percent from 2023 to 2030. The Blue Book also said big cylindrical batteries stand out in several market segments in 2024, projecting over 100 percent year-on-year shipment growth in residential energy storage, portable energy storage, and two-wheeler markets. As the use of lithium batteries becomes more widespread, users are demanding battery cells with better performance. In this case, battery providers are investing more in research and development, focusing on optimizing and innovating material formulations and production technologies. For example, the energy density of producer BAK Battery's third-generation big cylindrical battery cell has reached 300 Wh/Kg and the manufacturer has developed an exclusive low-temperature electrolyte formulation, enabling batteries to maintain exceptional discharge performance even in harsh environments. Furthermore, the Blue Book predicts that the period from 2025 to 2030 will mark an acceleration phase in the industrialization of the new 4680 big cylindrical battery, as production lines for such batteries are gradually being established. #WBE #Battery #ENERGYSTORAGE
