“Sustainability is a motherlode of innovation.” – Harvard Business Review Delivering value with a new product and capturing value in return as with a profit without regard to environmental and sustainable impact is not innovation, it’s exploitation. Innovation is usually driven by necessity, with our backs up against the wall. It also often emerges from the bottom up, because those on the “frontlines” working directly with customers or clients have the best and most immediate insights into their needs and pain points. Novameat, a Barcelona-based #sustainablefood technology firm that creates alternative meat products, revealed Thursday that it has raised €17.4 million in an oversubscribed Round A investment round. The funds will be used to increase manufacturing of the company's current plant-based alternative meat products, as well as to launch its new Shredded Nova-b*ef product, which will be available in mid-September. Agriculture has emerged as a major focal area for sustainability and climate action, as it accounts for a considerable amount of global #greenhousegas (GHG) emissions and is one of the most difficult areas to address climate change. According to the UN Food and #AgricultureOrganisation, whereas meat, milk, and eggs account for 34% of global protein consumption, global livestock emissions account for 14.5% of total anthropogenic GHG emissions. The livestock sector has a number of additional environmental concerns, including deforestation, land and water use, and other sustainability issues such as ethical animal treatment. Novameat's unique approach to developing alternative meat products makes use of #3Dprintingtechnology and a pea protein-based component blend. The products, which are based on the company's unique MicroForce technology, produce a texture that the company describes as similar to fibrous #animalmeat. The product comes in whole cut formats like as strips, steaks, pulled meat, and chunks. "We are delighted to close this Series A round and are grateful for the confidence shown by our new partners and the continued support of our existing investors," said Giuseppe Scionti, Novameat's CEO and Founder. "This financing represents a critical milestone in our journey, and we are more determined than ever to enable people to prioritise their well-being and the environment. It's excellent that this coincides with the release of our new Shredded Nova-b*ef, which has gotten overwhelmingly positive market feedback." Sofinnova Partners and Forbion led the #investment through their BioEconomy Fund, which was followed by reinvestments from Unovis Asset Management, Praesidium, and Rubio Impact Ventures. "Novameat has the potential to revolutionise the food industry by providing sustainable and tasty alternatives to animal-based proteins," stated Joško Bobanović, Partner at Sofinnova Partners. "With their great tasting products, #uniquetechnology platform, strong customer approval, in-house production capacity, and competitive cost structure they are well-positioned to seize the enormous market opportunity and drive further innovation in the sector." https://lnkd.in/fzpnPPW #foodindustry #sustainablefood #plantbasedmeat #sustainableprotein #foodinnovation #alternativemeatproduct #funding #startup #agricultureorganization #livestocksector #meatproduction #agriculture #GHGemission #marketopportunity NOVAMEAT

Maggot farming in Australia - It’s visionary and so is Goterra’s Founder and CEO, Olympia Yarger. At a Gathering of Tas Women in Ag members yesterday I listened to Olympia speak with passion and leadership about her food waste mission and global vision to decentralise food waste management with insect-powered, smart city infrastructure. Her solutions work and ARE working in basements where you can’t see them but boy are they making a difference. But her climb isn’t easy. Less than 2% of females obtain venture capital. Why is that? Funding for smart, innovative, transformative and proven ideas shouldn’t be hindered by your gender. So for all you Venture Capitalist investors out there - check out maggot farming. It’s cool and it’s transforming how we work with food waste …. A growing product stream.
