How do you decide the latency of an application? Someone might say that the API response time should be 200ms. Is there a standard/industry benchmark that governs the cap on response times or is there a scientific approach to define the response times? Should every one strive for 200ms or 500ms or some number that a leading tech company has defined for their applications? It depends on the application that you are building. Users interact with different applications at different rates e.g. the latency requirements depend on whether a user is trading or a machine (High Frequency Trading aka AlgorithmicTrading) is trading. Few hundred milliseconds are fine for trading but sub millisecond response is expected for HFT. The idea is to understand how frequently users are interacting with the app. How many messages are exchanged per second? I guess we are fine when our UPI app takes few seconds to complete a transaction. #latency #systemdesign #softwareengineering #scalability
