This blog explores these strategies, emphasizing their significance and implementation in the mining sector. Embracing the Hierarchy of Controls Elimination and Substitution: The First Line of Defense At the top of the hierarchy, elimination and substitution are the most effective means to control dust. This involves rethinking mining processes to either remove the source of dust or replace it with less dusty alternatives. While total elimination might be challenging, incremental changes can significantly reduce dust generation. Engineering Controls: Innovative Solutions Engineering controls are essential in modifying equipment and processes to minimize dust. This includes the installation of dust collection systems, using water sprays to suppress dust at its source, and incorporating sealed conveyor systems. Such measures require careful planning and consideration of the specific dust-producing activities in a mining operation. Advanced Ventilation Systems A critical component of engineering controls is the development and use of advanced ventilation systems. These systems effectively remove dust from the air, ensuring it doesn’t linger in the work environment. Customized solutions based on the mine’s layout and specific dust challenges are crucial for maximizing effectiveness. Administrative Controls: Modifying Work Practices Administrative controls focus on altering how and when tasks are performed to reduce dust exposure. This could include strategies like rotating workers to lower individual exposure times, scheduling high-dust activities during shifts with fewer workers, and ensuring thorough and regular housekeeping to remove dust accumulations. Training and Awareness A significant aspect of administrative controls is the continuous training and education of employees. Workers must be aware of the risks associated with dust exposure and understand how to use dust control systems effectively. Regular training sessions can keep this knowledge fresh and help inculcate a safety-first culture in the workplace. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): The Last Resort When other controls can’t fully mitigate dust exposure, PPE becomes critical. The appropriate selection and use of respirators are essential in such scenarios. The type of PPE chosen must correspond to the specific dust hazards present, ensuring maximum protection for workers. Silica Dust Regulations have just changed in the United States, with the Mining Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) issuing a final rule introducing an action level for Respirable Chrystaline Silica (RCS), which is present in most ore bodies, at 25 micrograms per m3 for an 8-hour time-weighted average. As is often the case with health and safety measures such as these, what gets regulated in one country, such as the US, eventually will be adapted in other countries, including Australia. As the year draws to a close, we are conducting a reflection survey to evaluate how WipWare's WipFrag, Solo 6, and Reflex 6 have contributed to enhancing mine productivity and supported mine managers in achieving their targets safely, efficiently, and profitably. Here are few Testimony from Users Conveyor Analysis System – Vital piece of equipment WipWare’s [conveyor analysis] system is a vital piece of equipment for us. It is tied to the SAG advanced control strategy (MPC), helping us determine the incoming %Fines which we use to compensate with fresh feed in order to avoid SAG over/under loads (which would throw us out of the maximum efficiency grinding point). By: Daniel Silva Automated fragmentation – drill and blast performance WipWare Automated fragmentation photo analysis is being used at Lafarge, Ravena quarry as a part of our ongoing drill, blast and primary crushing continuous process. WipWare’s Reflex system at the Lafarge quarry has been found to be a useful tool for monitoring and collecting raw data that is utilized to evaluate drill/blast performance. One of the examples of the measured gains achieved there using WipWare’s Reflex system as a blast/crush improvement toll is a 20% increase in crusher productivity and 12% reduction in crushed product cost with no change in drill and blast cost." The cameras allow us to understand the incoming ore’s particle size and color characteristics, to track the impact of these properties through SAG milling and flotation, and to provide real-time control inputs to the operators of these circuits. The WipWare team helped us troubleshoot and retrofit old versions of their technology and custom built a software algorithm to process camera color information which was specifically tailored to our use case.
