Ironically perhaps, for an Equalities Commissioner I'm making the case for bringing back child labour* this week * no, not 'that type' The good kind... the kind that builds resilience, confidence and self-esteem, as evidenced by the Harvard Grant Study findings Why don't kids work anymore? We all know the harms done by underparenting, but what about those done by 'overparenting'...? Turns out they're significant. If we want strong, happy kids, we have to give them responsibility: household chores when young and encouragement to find paid jobs as they reach their teens.. Not only does this build their confidence but it also provides a much-needed antidote to societal polarisation. Plus imho, learning how to pull a good pint is a critical life skill. 🌍 Today, on World Day Against Child Labour, we reaffirm our unwavering commitment to eradicating child labour from every corner of the supply chain. Every child deserves the right to education, play, and a childhood free from exploitation, and we're dedicated to making that a reality. 🤝 We recognize the immense challenge of ensuring good working conditions and human rights in today's complex global supply chains. That's why we advocate for collaborative action, leveraging our expertise in human rights and scalable technology alongside a network of companies equally dedicated to upholding human rights standards. Together, we possess the power to effect real change. By working hand-in-hand, we can create a world where every child's rights are protected, and no child is forced into labour. Let's stand united against child labour and make a difference that lasts. #EndChildLabour #WorldDayAgainstChildLabour #AndWider

Labour rights are human rights On this Human Rights Day, let us reaffirm a fundamental truth: Labour rights are human rights. A world free from exploitation, where development is inclusive, sustained, and sustainable for both people and the planet, begins with respecting and addressing labour rights. From safe workplaces to fair wages, from freedom of association to protection against discrimination—ensuring labour rights is the foundation of dignity and justice for all workers. It's time for nations, communities, regional organizations, and world leaders to prioritize labour rights and bridge the gaps that perpetuate inequality. Let's work together for a future where every worker is empowered, every voice is heard, and no one is left behind. #HumanRightsDay #LabourRights #DecentWork #SustainableDevelopment
