WALK OF STONE Curator and author: arch. Giorgio Canale, Creative Director DDM Branding The Plus Theatre is set to offer a unique and unforgettable experience at Marmomac this year, with the Walk of Stone exhibition, conceived and curated by architect Giorgio Canale, taking center stage. For the first time, visitors will be treated to a special walkway inspired by the Walk of Fame, with natural stone taking center stage. This tribute showcases the incredible variety and richness of natural materials, highlighting their diverse colors, textures, and intricate details. Spanning approximately 240 square meters, this exhibition serves as an exclusive platform for both Italian and international companies to display the unique qualities of their products. I visited the Zurich Design Weeks a couple of weeks ago. Among the large offer of visits, openings, and talks, I focused on three different formats, feeding my love and curiosity for all kinds of design practices. First, I attended a PR and communication workshop organized by Pro Helvetia and the Swiss Design Association, presented by Romain Casella of MAY Concepts. While the focus was laid on practical tips to have an authentic and efficient way to communicate about your product and your service, what I took away was the work to be done by each of us to clearly identify the value we bring to the world and to best communicate it. The morning after, I attended a floral art workshop by the talented Swedish floral artist Nicklas Hultman at the Polestar office. The table gathered creative professionals coming from across Europe, working at the crossroad of fine arts, product, graphic, and interaction design, development aid, diplomacy, and consulting. So many industries were represented, yet a common language was spoken, that of the delicate, yet powerful artistry of making a piece that respected the organic shapes of nature, while giving it the form and edge one wanted. Finally, I swung by a gem of a place - the DT22 location - hidden away in the Fluntern neighborhood. Lush plants, a former 3-meter deep indoor pool, warm wooden floors, all bathing in a soft autumn light, were the setting of "Echoes", a beautifully curated and delightful cross-continental exhibition by Paulina Reséndiz of Basalto Collective. Bridging both Mexican and Swiss traditional crafts and modern design, the various pieces reminded me of the underlying importance of the roots of each practice and each craft, and how, while being anchored in their tradition, each designer took the liberty to explore, to add another layer, to cast another light. The combined impressions raised two questions: How to best identify your intrinsic value and own your authentic self? How do you, knowing where you come from, speak your unique (creative) voice and add to the common language? I would love to hear from you: How do you define your intrinsic value? Have you come across great examples?

This year's Milan Design Week is a spectacle of sensory experiences. Google has teamed up with Chromasonic's Johannes Girardoni and Harriet Bourne Girardoni to explain colors using sound frequencies in a way that even your technophobe aunt might pause her cat videos to appreciate, making high-tech an unexpected guest at a neon dinner party. Adding to the visual feast, JR’s monumental printed rock installation "La Nascita" outside Milan Central Station offers a striking sculptural deviation that turns every viewer into a reluctant mountaineer. Meanwhile, Saint Laurent decides it’s a good idea to mix modernist architecture with dishware in an exhibition that could double as a very chic yard sale, and yes, it's as sophisticated as you'd hope, with every dishware piece looking ready for a museum heist. Under the Design Space AlUla's sun, attendees bask in a golden glow that screams retro yet feels like a sunbath of the future, all while the cosmos casts shadows like it's gossiping about us. (Momentary aside: Why can't designers just let the disco era go? And apparently, neither can the cosmos.) Not to be outdone, LASVIT’s fused glass pieces catch light like liquid jewels, turning every reflection into a story about opulence that even the richest czar couldn’t imagine. It's a week where every installation begs you not to just see, but to participate – because apparently, Milan doesn’t do passive observation.

Transcending Traditional Structures WiE see more than walls and floors in buildings; these are canvases that stir feelings deep within us. Architects now weave graphics into their work, pushing beyond mere function to touch on something deeper—our emotions. The use of symbols isn't new but how they're integrated has evolved tremendously. Shapes and colors don't just stand out for the sake of beauty; they tell stories, guiding experiences through spaces large and small. This is what architectural graphic design does best: it marries meaning with form—it transcends. It molds our interaction with the space around us like a fabric shaping our daily journey yet invisible at first glance. Every line drawn harbors potential to resonate across a spectrum; every shade chosen can echo an emotion waiting to be felt by those who step inside. That’s the power of this field—a genre not confined by tradition but inspired by it to create anew. We're no longer just building structures—we’re crafting experiences, sculpting moments that live long after one leaves a place behind. WHAT IF MIES HAD VENTANA? I often wonder how Mies van der Rohe would have used large-format digital surfaces, if they were available during his era. In addition to the fine stone, polished metals and wood paneling he often used to create sumptuous, visually rich surroundings, how would Mies have used digital content? How would he have employed the fundamental elements of digital displays to enrich a surface, such as luminosity, color, motion and dynamic range? Mies worked with pioneering lighting designer Richard Kelly, who often called out a concept he called "play of brilliants" as one of 3 foundational aspects of good lighting design. Kelly stated: “Play of brilliants is Times Square at night. It is the eighteenth century ballroom of crystal chandeliers and many candle flames. It is sunlight on a fountain or a rippling brook. It is the rose window of Chartres. Play of brilliants excites the optic nerves, and in turn stimulates the body and spirit, quickens the appetite, awakens curiosity, sharpens the wit…” Kelly's Play of Brilliants was his balance against Focal Glow and Ambient Luminescence, luminous elements that are required in any competent architectural space but can become stagnant and oppressive if not balanced with the visual dynamics offered by Play of Brilliants. Kelly also offered his Six Qualities of Light, in which he was addressing the dynamic potential of light: “… light itself as a physical force can have specific qualities attributed to it by the regular occurrence of effects as does the wind [including]:" 1. Intensity 2. Brightness 3. Diffusion 4. Spectral Color 5. Direction 6. Motion So I have to imagine that avant-garde Modernist pioneers like Mies van der Rohe and Richard Kelly would have eagerly embraced large format digital displays to add dynamic, immersive visual richness to their designs. They would have embraced digital microLED tiles into their modern material palettes as readily as they did travertine marble, rosewood paneling and polished brass. And they would have used those digital surfaces to explore concepts such as cycles of time, layers of reality or as dynamic digital art canvases. Has this peeked your curiosity? The way I see it, color isn’t just an aesthetic choice—it’s a form of silent persuasion. It guides us, calms us, alerts us, and tells us where we belong. In environmental graphic design, color operates beyond decoration; it’s a strategic tool that shapes experience. This ArchDaily article does a good job at exploring how color influences identity, wayfinding, and emotional resonance within architectural spaces. The right color choices don’t just beautify a space—they establish rhythm, mood, and a sense of place. They make a sprawling campus feel navigable, a sterile lobby feel inviting, a chaotic environment feel controlled. Because at the end of the day, everyone wants to feel invited—to belong, to know they’re exactly where they’re meant to be. I’ve seen firsthand how intentional color application can elevate a brand’s presence within a space, making it more intuitive and immersive. It’s not just about matching a logo—it’s about designing an experience that speaks directly to the people who move through it. So, how do we move beyond "on-brand colors" and start thinking about color as an active agent in design? How do we harness it to shape behavior, perception, and memory? The real question is: Are you using color to merely decorate—or to truly shape the experience of your space? #EnvironmentalGraphicDesign #ColorTheory #Architecture #UserExperience #DesignThinking
