Do at least one pre opening in your future hospitality career. The best way to understand the hospitality industry is to experience at least one preopening, either a restaurant (TGI Fridays Jalan Sultan Ismail and Cafe Iguana BSC for me) or a hotel (Goldenbay Bintulu and Rosa Melaka). In pre opening, you see things that you could never see in other settings. For those who have a passion for hospitality, it's a unique experience that empowers you, teaches you so much and allows you to grow. The skills you gain help you to move up the ladder much faster than when you work in an already established property, where sometimes it’s not that easy to get the big picture. And most importantly, when you work at a pre opening restaurant or hotel, you have a special kind of training and exposure that goes beyond the single property. Pre openings can be uniquely challenging and some people who experience it may not want to do it again. But, for the right profile, it comes with skills, flexibility, and an adaptability that is addicting and creates a desire to do it again. The thing is that you will learn five times faster than in an established hotel because you basically see all the departments come to life.

We have horrible service in hotel food and beverage outlets because we have rejects managing it. It has been one year, I have seen applications from local candidates who were supervisors and now thinks they can be a food and beverage manager. I have seen fresh graduates from hotel management school who thinks they should start their career in the hotel industry, at the very least as a restaurant manager. So where have the good ones gone? Many to Uniqlo for one... 👏👏 😅, even in Sungai Petani their service is top notch. Every guests is greeted with a smile AND eye contact 👏👏. Every request is followed up right up to the end when you end buying more Airism shirts than needed because the cashier was so friendly. In the past we were taught to wow the guests, but sadly today, and in the near future, I dont see anyone wowing the guests anymore. Just look at the quality of entry level local staffs and managers for hospitality today......and how many more we will lose to Zus, Uniqlo and many more independent hospitality businesses? Think about this, when TRX opened, how many good staffs that could have worked in hotels are working there now?

What sort of stupid hiring policy encourages a hotel in Malaysia to hire an expat for the position of Director of Food and Beverage? Someone please, try your very best to explain to me why we need an expat for this position? If it was an expat to be the GM or Executive Chef, it will definitely be debatable for certain luxury hotels and resorts in Malaysia, but for a Director of Food and Beverage? Really? We Malaysians are that pathetic in managing food and beverage?? And if you really wanted a fair skinned fellow to be your DFOB, i know of a few really good Eurasian DFOBs in Malaysia. Really niamah!!!
