Roz is an absolute legend in every way.

Important day and a strong message delivered across the Maritime and Defence Industry. An improvement of the lived experience is desperately needed to encourage more personnel to join a thriving and exhilarating sector. Government’s 2050 Maritime Strategy is for 30% of the workforce to be female. Currently most organisations struggle to see double figures (standfast Royal Navy). We still struggle to see inclusion across the workforce with women frequently seen as being ‘less’ or a ‘nuisance’ through wishing for both family life and careers. The two are not mutually exclusive. I was one of those in my 20s who felt I just wanted to get on with my job and that everyone should be treated equally without getting involved in female specific organisations. I didn’t want to rock the boat and threw scorn on those who did. Now I am the one with humble pie finding myself with both childcare and career requirements. In the UK Merchant Navy >92% identify as white British male, more work needs to be done. I am proud of the work I do within the RFA as well as what I achieve in my seagoing career. It is better to inspire, empower and promote inclusion across the workforce to be stronger together.

Selfless service means serving when called - We never know when our moments arrive. Even our daily routine benefits from readiness to recognize opportunities and holding the confidence to act in spite of risk. Soldiers and Sailors, Airmen, Marines, Defeneder and Cuttermen don’t serve for medals. They serve for opportunities to take action and make a difference, typically in smaller ways that add up over time. A rare few find themselves in circumstances requiring truly selfless and decisive acts. We are right to honor their service and embrace their ability to inspire and share their experiences. We can be certain that in those moments, there were no thoughts of medals. It was all about survival and overcoming the immediate challenge, protecting their team. Focus on your immediate challenge this week, and then reflect on what it helps you overcome. #dreambigger

A really good long form article (with data) illustrating the tension at Service academies between the need for diverse perspectives in their officer corps and systems that often disadvantage the diverse individuals. While this tension is seen in the experiences of the socio-economically diverse and prior enlisted (both apply to me), it is most acute for racial diversity because it is an ever-visible part of a students identity. The academy prep schools like the United States Military Academy Preparatory School provide immense value by improving the access to and success of these more of these diverse populations. However, the core quantitative “meritocracy” of the academies present inherent challenges evidenced by the data in this article. The article sums up the challenges of quantifying every aspect of “merit” for officer candidates: “Owens has expressed concern that cadets are too often treated as numbers: their GPA or class rankings that determine who gets coveted assignments such as a place in flight school…But I've been talked down to more because of my class rank than because I'm a Black man."
