They often sleep while standing or lying down & only need short naps (usually around 5-30 minutes). • Blue tongued: While their tongues are relatively long, they are also dark blue or purplish in color. Scientists believe this pigment helps prevent their tongues from getting sunburned during prolonged periods of feeding on thorny acacia trees. • Giraffe mane: Male giraffes have thicker & more pronounced manes on their necks compared to females. These manes not only provide protection during combat but also serve as a secondary sexual characteristic to attract males. • Silent giants: Despite their large size, giraffes are relatively quiet animals. They communicate using infrasound, which is a sound below human hearing. This allows them to communicate over long distances without alerting predators. • Giraffe gestation: Giraffe pregnancies may seem long at around 15 months, but their calves are born relatively developed.
