The Honourable Michael Kirby and I are both lawyers. Barring a series of incredibly unlikely events, only one of us is going to go down in history as one of the greats of the Australian legal profession. My point is that lawyers, even good lawyers, are ten a penny. Great lawyers are difficult to find, and exceptional lawyers are rare as rocking horse sh*t. I get incredibly frustrated by the way that some businesses go about building their legal functions. They delegate the hiring process to generalist teams, who, with the best will in the world, have no f*cking idea what a great lawyer looks like, and resort to ‘top tier background = good, anything else = bad’ when deciding whose resumes to submit to the hiring manager in the legal team. This may seem like a barely-veiled plug for St. Leger Brockman Legal Recruitment. It’s not. Work with whoever you want. There are some really good operators out there. But make sure that whoever is searching for lawyers for you, whether that be someone from your talent team or a specialist legal recruitment business, actually understands the business of law and what it takes to succeed. Another rant over. Have a great weekend. #lawyers #legalrecruitment #inhouselawyers
