Over 100 US cities could see big increases in insurance costs or even lose coverage, leading to falling property values, lower tax income, and higher borrowing costs. ➡️ While coastal cities like Houston and Miami are often at risk, cities inland are not safe. Places in the Midwest, Southwest, and Northeast face serious threats from floods, fires, and extreme heat. ➡️ To protect themselves from climate change, cities need to invest in green spaces, flood protection, and heat mitigation strategies, while federal, state, and local governments must collaborate to address the financial challenges and ensure equitable support. What is a wetland mitigation bank and how does it benefit our community? The Lummi Nation was the first Tribal Government in the country to establish a wetland mitigation bank which became operational in 2012. The tribe believes mitigation banking is more desirable to conventional on-site mitigation of unavoidable wetland impacts. Today, the City of Bellingham is nearing the end of their lengthy process for Whatcom County’s first public wetland mitigation bank (the project was first proposed in 2012). Read our latest article, “The Benefits of Wetland Mitigation Banks” to learn how wetland mitigation banking can play a key role in balancing preservation with progress by following the link. https://lnkd.in/gh-UChg8 . . . #wetlands #wetlandmitigationbank #environmentalpreservation #housing #bellinghamwa #whatcomcounty

🏡 Accounting for approximately 10% of the nation's rental housing, federally assisted housing is a limited but critical resource for the lowest-income renters. Increasingly frequent and severe weather events pose a growing threat to federally assisted housing and its residents, who are often the least prepared to respond to and recover from disasters. 📈 The National Low Income Housing Coalition and the Public and Affordable Housing Research Corporation (PAHRC) have examined these risks in a report, Natural Hazards and Federally Assisted Housing: https://lnkd.in/edT3Qcc4 👉 "The disproportionate exposure of federally assisted homes to heat risk raises important questions about both the siting and quality of these homes, as well as policies regarding utility allowances in federal housing programs," said NLIHC President and CEO Diane Yentel. "Greater investments must be made to improve heat resilience in neighborhoods, such as by improving tree canopy coverage in communities where federally assisted homes already exist and siting new assisted housing in neighborhoods with less exposure to extreme heat."
