In 2018, Hans Rosling – a Swedish physician – published a book called “Factfulness: Ten Reasons We’re Wrong About the World – and Why Things Are Better Than You Think.” I think it is a book worth having – Bill Gates offered to purchase a copy for any 2018 college graduate upon request – and while the book can be Pollyanniash, and is certainly not perfect, in my opinion it is an excellent exercise both in overcoming innate biases and in understanding cognitive dissonance (holding two contrary beliefs at the same time). How can the world be in such bad shape AND be getting better at the same time? Rosling points out that many of us “…believe the world is poorer, less healthy, and more dangerous than it actually is…” which he attributed “…not to random chance but to misinformation.”   Earth Day was first celebrated in 1970 and it was the inspiration of Senator Gaylord Nelson (Wisconsin) after he viewed an 800-square-mile oil slick in the Santa Barbara Channel, the result of a Union Oil well blowout 6 miles off the California coast. Nelson envisioned Earth Day as a “teach-in,” an opportunity to raise awareness and consciousness toward taking action. I suggest we use Earth Day this year as a reminder to recommit to environmental justice work, and to CELEBRATE OUR REMARKABLE PLANET! As the folks at Earthday.org say: “Earth Day is a reminder of the importance of environmental conservation and sustainability, encouraging us to come together and take action for a healthier planet and brighter future.”   There are thousands and thousands of people out there right now figuring out ways to restore, reclaim, regenerate and renew the world. People pulling plastic out of the oceans, using less energy to make cement, figuring out how to build smaller and more efficiently, fighting for human rights. People who are unwilling to stand by and let the world be degraded by greed, inaction, inattention, or ignorance. People who give sanctuary to abandoned farm animals, who give their time and money to charitable causes, who remember to savor the slow beauty of a leaf unfurling. I hope you will take a moment today to savor your own connections to our beautiful, complicated world.   Here are a few recommendations for overcoming cognitive dissonance:   Earthday.org’s theme for 2024 is “Planet vs Plastics”: current challenges, facts, figures, and actions to take around plastics: https://lnkd.in/eAtnhtfZ   Check out A Brief History of the Future on PBS (https://lnkd.in/e_Q8aNCi) which (I sound like a broken record here) is not perfect but is an attempt at reimagining our future in non-dystopian ways   The Daily Climate’s Good News page (https://lnkd.in/ejknzkzu) which is “ a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization dedicated to driving science into public discussion"   BuildingGreen, whose mission is Championing the Changemakers in Sustainable Design & Building (https://lnkd.in/eHbqqRdV). The Paradox of Progress: Philanthropy vs. Environmental Impact in the case of Sir Jim Ratcliffe University of Oxford In a world grappling with myriad challenges, the actions of influential figures and corporations often present us with a paradox. A recent instance involves Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his company, INEOS On one hand, their generous £100 million donation to Ineos Oxford Institute for Antimicrobial Research antimicrobial resistance (AMR) research represents a beacon of hope for global health. This initiative could potentially save millions of lives by addressing a looming healthcare crisis. Conversely, INEOS’s £600 million investment in a new petrochemical plant underscores the environmental dilemma we face. Such ventures, while economically significant, contribute to the very environmental issues threatening our planet’s future, from plastic pollution to carbon emissions. This juxtaposition begs the question: How do we reconcile beneficial philanthropic efforts with activities that have adverse environmental impacts? It’s a reminder that our path to a better world is fraught with complexities and contradictions. As members of a global community, it’s crucial we engage in discussions about the multi-faceted roles corporations play in society. Awareness is the first step toward understanding these complexities. We must commend positive actions while also courageously addressing and mitigating negative impacts. What are your thoughts? Can we encourage a shift towards more environmentally sustainable practices without diminishing the importance of contributions to critical healthcare challenges? Today we released Kenvue's inaugural Healthy Lives Mission 2023 Report which highlights the progress we made on our ESG goals and commitments.
