When learning to release the Shot Put effectively, mastering the correct grip is paramount. Your students may be good at generating power in the delivery, but without the correct grip, they won’t be able to transfer this power into the delivery ⚡ The shot put should rest on the fingers, leaving the palm clean, which allows for extension of the wrist and fingers during the release. To ensure stability and support, the forearm should be positioned beneath the shot, using the skeletal system to bear the weight. Finding the corner of the jaw and tucking the shot under the ear aids in maintaining proximity to the neck, ensuring contact is maintained throughout the delivery. An important, but often misunderstood point is to avoid lifting the elbow to a 90-degree angle too early in the throw, as this compromises support and limits the involvement of the chest in the delivery. Throughout the delivery motion, the forearm should remain directly behind the shot, to facilitate a full extension and to impart force through the shot put and through the line of the delivery.
