My reflections on the ‘Future European Competitiveness’ Draghi report published in an article on the Times of Malta . The Draghi report 📄provides a good opportunity for discussion on the direction Europe 🇪🇺 needs to take during this period of transition 📈. The economic challenges derived by the #green and #digitaltransition, coupled with the volatile #geopolitical environment, require the EU to take bold decisions to chart its own future if it wishes to avoid being shaped by others. 🇪🇺 *Summary of the European Summit* 🇪🇺 On April 17th and 18th, the 27 European heads of state and government gathered to discuss competitiveness and the future of the EU. They concluded that a competitiveness pact is essential to bridge gaps with international partners. 📊 Main objectives: - Modernize the single market by June 2025. - Prioritize strategic autonomy and reduce dependencies in key sectors such as energy, raw materials, and technology. - Improve transport links and mobility within the EU. 🌿 The Green Deal seems to take a back seat to economic concerns, though the goal of a "climate-neutral" economy remains in the background. 💡 The European industry is at the heart of discussions, with a focus on the Capital Markets Union as a key lever to finance European competitiveness. However, the question of supervision of this Union divides member states. #EuropeanSummit #Competitiveness #SingleMarket #StrategicAutonomy #GreenDeal #CapitalMarketsUnion #Transport #EuropeanIndustry

Sustainability is intrinsically linked to competitiveness. Indeed, sustainability is not just about being environmentally and socially responsible, but also about being economically sound. Essentially, we should be focussing on ‘sustainable competitiveness’. We need to hold on to a well calibrated approach on sustainability to ensure the right balance, and the European Commission’s notable reference to a ‘clean industrial deal’ as opposed to a ’green deal’ sends a subtle yet meaningful message that should be welcomed.
In January, the newly appointed European Commission is expected to present and frame its work around the annual Single Market & Competitiveness Report, proposing a new Competitiveness Act and Fund, setting benchmark targets reflective of the proposals in Draghi’s competitiveness report. Likewise, it is expected to propose a Competitiveness Compass to guide the direction of EU policymaking going forward. Clearly, the EU’s race towards competitiveness is expected to dominate the Commission’s work programme. This renewed direction and strategic focus is positive and needed for the EU to restore its competitive edge. #europeancommission #competitiveness #sustainability

🚀 A New Era for European Industry 🚀 We are encouraged by the insights from Professor Draghi’s report on the future of European competitiveness. This “Wake-Up Call” has amplified the concerns of our industries, pushing them into the political spotlight. The Antwerp Declaration’s call for an Industrial Deal is now echoed in this report, underscoring the urgent need for action on innovation, energy pricing, and geopolitical resilience. The report not only highlights the structural challenges facing Europe but also offers a clear pathway to strengthen our industrial future. It is essential for policymakers to act swiftly, especially as these discussions will take center stage during the Informal European Council in November this year. 🌍 A Renewed Focus on Competitiveness 🌍 With the announcement of the new College of Commissioners for 2024-2029, President Ursula von der Leyen is setting a clear agenda for Europe’s competitiveness, decarbonisation, and digitalisation. Many recommendations from the Draghi report are now integrated into the mission letters of the new Commissioners, aligning industry priorities with the EU’s strategic goals. 📢 We are proud of the progress we’ve made together, and our teams are diligently preparing for the challenges and opportunities ahead. We remain cautiously optimistic that, with a united effort, we can shape a competitive, resilient, and sustainable Europe 🤝 #LimeSector #EuropeanIndustry #Competitiveness #Sustainability #Innovation #PolicyMaking #IndustrialDeal #AntwerpDeclaration #DraghiReport #EuLA #EuropeanLimeAssociation

🚨 Europe’s Competitiveness is at Risk 🚨 The future of Europe’s economy depends on tackling three significant challenges: 1️⃣ Innovation – Europe lags behind the U.S. and China in new technology. Only 4 of the world’s top 50 tech companies are European. We must close this gap. 2️⃣ Clean Energy – Energy prices in Europe are 2-3 times higher than in the U.S. If Europe can't make energy cleaner and cheaper, its competitiveness will suffer. 3️⃣ Security & Self-reliance – Relying on other countries for critical resources makes Europe vulnerable. It needs to build up its own capacity. The report on the Future of European Competitiveness lays out the path forward to ensure growth and stability. Now, all that's left is the implementation. Piece of cake, right? 🍰 🎥 Watch Mario Draghi introduce this critical report to the European Commission here: https://lnkd.in/gpfuQNBe Draghi's report for download here: https://lnkd.in/gmr-neHC #innovation #cleanenergy #Europe #competitiveness #technology #business #growth

📑 The Mario Draghi report on Europe's competitiveness provides an important voice in the ongoing debate on the future of the EU's economy and its role at a global stage. We are pleased to see that the topic of #competitiveness has been taken seriously and apart from identifying key challenges that the EU needs to address, it also provides concrete policy proposals that can help the EU achieve its strategic objectives in the field of #decarbonisation, #digitalisation and #innovation. The report attempts to present a new comprehensive industrial strategy for Europe consisting of recommendations for the identified key economic sectors as well as for horizontal policy areas such as innovation, investments, competition policy or governance. If the proposed ideas are to be successfully implemented, it is worth noting that a large part of actions will be financed on the basis of the current MFF. As the report is supposed to inspire and guide the new European Commission and Commissioners as well as provide a significant contribution to the upcoming Clean Industrial Deal, Business & Science Poland believes that it is key to ensure that: ✔ legislators are willing to work on implementing the key elements of the proposals; ✔ hard-to-abate sectors receive an appropriate level of support given the challenges they face; ✔ identify and unlock the source of financing for the EU transformation estimated in the report at EUR 800 bln as the minimum annual requirement for additional investments; ✔ focus is put on boosting innovation (among others by removing inconsistent and restrictive regulations blocking commercialization of innovative products). 👉 At Business & Science Poland, the report will now become the subject of our in-depth analysis which will help our members identify and monitor key areas impacting their business operations and plan engagement activities to influence the outcome of the proposed solutions. #BSP_Brussels #BSP_Poland #BSP #eu #energy #climat #energytransition #industry #CleanIndustrialDeal

The European Union Must Write Competitiveness in Golden Letters. It is Now or Never. Competitiveness must be permanently considered. It has a horizontal dimension, whatever economic sector we are talking about. We have to redirect competitiveness to be focused on a global level. Paraphrasing Mario Draghi, we have seen ourselves as our competitors, even in sectors where we share common interests. And at the same time we have not paid enough attention outward. That implies, among other things, that we haven’t moved up a gear regarding harmonization in the internal market. Industry is our main asset. We urgently need an EU pact on industry. Ursula von der Leyen, in her last speech of the state of the Union’s debate, already included some words in that direction. Let me emphasize that the time for competitiveness is now or never. Tomorrow will be too late. #competitiveness #NoworNever #industry #EU
