Hey, this is Coach Rooney and we are just finishing some of our final practices, getting ready for the Regional Track and Field Championships. And on this historic day in track and field, I am going to share perhaps the biggest performance secret I can ever teach you. I shared it with the athletes today and I'm going to give it to you now. So I got a little quiz right. Do you know what today is? Do you know what today is, May 6th, 2024? Well, if you know anything about track and field, today is the 70th anniversary. In one of the most earth shattering physical feats, one of the things that changed the performances of so many others in the history of the sport, it happened 70 years ago today on ifly Field in England and it was done by a young medical student named Roger Bannister. Now if you know anything about sports, you probably said, yeah, I know, that's the guy that broke the four minute mile, right? Who cares? Who cares? Well, for hundreds of years up to that point, thousands and thousands of athletes had tried. Scientists thought it was physiologically impossible. They said you would die in the attempt. Nobody had ever done it before, see, But you don't think about it as much now because the secret I'm going to share with you. But at that time, on little training, Roger Bannister on a blistering cold day went out there and went 359 nine. He did it. But if you know anything about the story, it doesn't stop there. See shortly after that other people that were pursuing it that could never do it. Other people that were pursuing it, all of a sudden another person does it right and then another person does it. And now these 70 years later, you kind of shrug your shoulders. Don't think it's much. Thousands of people have done it. High school kids can do it. But. That's not what the secret is. The secret, and this is the challenge I have for you, right? Wait a minute. Well, what was it? Did the human body change? Did Physiology change? Like, what changed? Was it a physical change that now made it possible for him to do it and then so many thousands of others since? And the answer is no, it wasn't a physical change. It was a psychological change. See, he believed it was possible. And then when he did it, because somebody had done it, everybody believed it was possible. And now people can do it like it's not even as much of a big deal anymore. Still a big deal, but not as much anymore. So here's what the message for you today, right? How we can celebrate. Roger Bannister, Sir Roger Bannister, who was actually knighted twice. And and because it wasn't just about sports, but his success as a neurosurgeon, too. And you should know that one. But here's the lesson for you. Maybe it's not the physical thing holding you back. Maybe you're thinking you don't have enough gifts or enough natural talent, but you're wrong. Maybe it's the psychological barrier that's stopping you, right? It's maybe that you don't believe. So my challenge for you is to start executing that belief muscle. What's your 4 minute mile, right? What do you need to do? What do you want to achieve that you didn't think was possible before? Maybe you got to go see somebody else. Do it, go check out the people that have done it. But I'm sharing this with you, right? The obstacle isn't the hurdles, right? It's not the hurdle. The hurdle you have is probably in your head. So that's the message I have for you. Fired up about it. Keep an eye on our track team because we're coming for you.
