August is Golf Month, and I've recently started to really enjoy the game, especially since it's become a family affair. My kids are loving it too! Chloe (6) and Sophie (4) are taking lessons and enjoying summer camps, while little Aiden (2) already has his own set of clubs and loves playing in the backyard and hallway. He often wakes up saying, "Daddy, I want to play golf!" Their favorite part? The snack shack, of course, with all its treats! I've managed to break 100 on my home course, Spanish Oaks, and my next goal is to break 90. I'm also looking forward to participating in more tournaments and playing golf during our travels with my wife, Anjou. I took a break from golf for a few years while living in San Francisco, focusing on building a business and starting a family. Now that we're in Austin, it's great to get out on the course with friends and neighbors, enjoying a few hours in nature and learning to overcome the challenges. I've noticed that golf has some surprising parallels with investing: ⛳ Just like preparing your shots on the course, creating financial strategies requires a well-thought-out approach and a clear vision for your goals. ⛳ Avoiding hazards on the course reminds me of managing financial risks and navigating market fluctuations. ⛳ Both golf and investing require patience and perseverance as you work towards your goals. ⛳ And just as the game of golf evolves, so does the financial landscape. Continuous learning and adaptation are crucial for success in both. Recently, I've started taking my clubs with me on trips, playing in Ireland, Hawaii, and various courses in California. According to a recent National Golf Foundation study, there has been a cumulative contraction of golf courses of about 12% since 2006, meaning over 2,000 18-hole equivalents have closed. Surviving courses benefit financially, and combined with the record number of rounds played (531 million in 2023), golf thrives. However, also according to the NGF, a "disproportionate" number of those course closures were in the "value" category of a $40 or less greens fee. So while we celebrate and congratulate ourselves that there has been a 25% increase in women golfers and a 40% increase in junior golfers since 2019, the question remains - where are they all going to play? The often family-owned, generally unaffiliated, value-priced public course is all too often the one left standing when the music stops. Many experts have (rightly) said golf has an inventory problem, meaning too few golf courses for larger roster of golf-hungry players. But it has a second inventory problem - too few affordable options which may just squander the passionate infusion of newbies without access to a course and a rate that will help nurture that passion. What should those value-priced courses do? Be better. Program better. Attract those (already eager!) newbies to your facilities. Make your ranges better. Develop stronger instructional programs. Since August is Golf Month, I have been thinking about how much I enjoyed the quality time I spent playing golf (very poorly) with my late brother and sister-in-law. I call that time some of the best hours of humiliation in my life but worth every minute for the quality time we spent together in such beautiful and peaceful settings. It is amazing how much you can learn about someone while playing golf, even when you’ve known them your entire life. Golf Month also made me think about what it takes to consistently score well—there are definitely some parallels between the sport and personal finance. ⛳ Like preparing your shots on the course, creating financial strategies requires a defined approach and a long-term vision for your goals. ⛳ Avoiding hazards on a golf course is similar to managing financial risks and navigating market fluctuations. ⛳ Both golf and finance require patience as you pursue your goals. ⛳ The game of golf, like the financial landscape, is constantly evolving. GOLF - It’s Never Too Late to Start Three years ago, I decided to take a leap into something completely outside my comfort zone: golf. I had never played any sport in my life, so this was uncharted territory for me. But with encouragement from my wife and a few friends, I picked up a golf club and decided to give it my all. The journey hasn’t been easy—learning a new skill rarely is. But it’s been rewarding beyond words. Over the past three years, I’ve not only fallen in love with the game but also achieved milestones I never thought possible. 🏆 Five trophies: Four for tournament wins and one for being named Most Improved Player at my golf club in 2023. 🎯 I’m still a high-handicapper, but I’m proud to say I’m lowering it every year with dedication and practice. ⛳ More importantly, I’ve discovered the joy of connecting with friends and meeting amazing people on the course. People often tell me, “It’s too late to start a new sport.” My answer is simple: It’s never too late. If you put your heart into something and push yourself, you’ll be amazed at what you can achieve. Golf has taught me patience, resilience, and the value of community.
