Black leaders around the country are collaborating in increasingly intersectional ways. Meaningful change does not emerge out of any single entity or nonprofit, and instead is a collective work done through multiple actors across organizations. Through support, education, and mutual community building, these leaders are making a difference where it counts. #BlackLeadership #Justice #NonprofitLeadership

This Black History Month, let's celebrate the remarkable leaders driving change in the nonprofit sector! With nearly three-fourths of Black-led and Black-benefiting nonprofits guided by their founders, it's clear that their dedication knows no bounds. However, these organizations face challenges in accessing diverse funding sources. It's crucial for philanthropy to step up, bridge the funding gap, and provide essential support in areas like coaching and fundraising. At Scott & Crosby Staffing, Inc., we're committed to empowering nonprofit leaders. Our tailored staffing solutions and expertise can help your organization thrive, allowing you to focus on what truly matters: making a difference in your community. Let's honor the resilience and impact of Black-led nonprofits this month and beyond. Together, let's commit to building a more inclusive and supportive future. #BlackExcellence #NonprofitLeadership #BlackExcellence #scstaffinginc #scottandcrosby #NonprofitLeadership #BlackHistoryMonth 🖤 https://lnkd.in/dhvezpjD

While many corporations have invested in DEI from either external pressure or a genuine desire to be more just in their practices, there are still major gaps in progress that we can now begin to quantify. Many DEI programs have had more than a few years to get an understanding of a respective organization's situation. There is a genuine resistance to giving DEI leaders any real resource or follow through on findings, and whether it be for historical or cultural reasons, this pushback ends up causing real harm due to purely artificial barriers. For nonprofits to build trust, they need to make good on their DEI promises. #Nonprofit #Justice #Culture #DEI

As a leader of a service providing organization, getting corporate and philanthropic funding is the biggest challenge that I face. That's ok, challenges are part of the job. What is unfair and unwinnable is the misinformation that I have to address when talking with funders about issues pertaining to social equity. Addressing the lies about education equity and economic security through workforce development is insurmountable. Funders can help by being objective and aligned to their focus areas, while creating environments where leaders such as myself can pitch our work.
The right wing came for Black nonprofits—and it worked. Funding has plunged since 2020

As we kick off our thirteenth cohort of the DiverseForce on Boards program, we wanted to share this Nonprofit Quarterly article about the lack of diversity on nonprofit boards. This piece highlights that nonprofit boards are still overwhelmingly white and underrepresent the communities they serve. It also underscores the need for intentional board recruitment, onboarding, and succession planning — which are topics woven into many of our DiverseForce on Boards program sessions! 🌍 🤝 #DiverseForceonBoards #DiversityMatters #NonprofitLeadership #Inclusion

Periodically, I ruffle feathers and bring this topic up. There are several underlying issues that contribute to this gross imbalance of representation in the nonprofit sector. If it were just the sector alone, it would be disturbing enough. But in THIS sector, where the images of the communities receiving outreach are so Black and brown, the stark contrast is striking (and alarming IMO). As I recently posted here on LinkedIn, there is a very diverse pool of professionals available to staff AND LEAD NPOs. The fact that they are NOT diversely staffed is a choice (whether that choice is made consciously or subconsciously is up for debate). No matter how many DEI sessions we include in conferences and meetings, this issue can not be resolved until we face the foundational mindsets that created the landscape.
In order to facilitate equitable systems change in the nonprofit sector, we have to consider who is leading most nonprofit organizations. According to recent data from Candid overall, 47% of nonprofit staff are white but 70% of nonprofit CEOs are white. This lack of diversity impacts so many aspects of how nonprofits support their staff and view the individuals they serve. Is the workplace environment safe for its staff and volunteers? Does the leadership participate in extractive relationships when "partnering" with smaller organizations and/or organizations led by people of color? Do they approach the communities they serve with a white savior complex, unconscious bias, and/or racist views? Do they recognize that most of the issues that the nonprofit sector solves are a result of racial inequities and systemic racism? There are so many more questions that we can ask about nonprofit leadership and how it can impact the work of the nonprofit sector.
