Interesting article on Steven Cooke's paper about the peer-review process, published in FACETS, Canada's first and only multidisciplinary open-access science journal from the Canadian Science Publishing. The challenges with #peerreview are well-known, but what’s even more crucial is finding solutions to improve the process and strengthen trust in science. Cooke’s vision is “refreshingly collaborative and forward-thinking”. I liked the sense of community where both authors and reviewers can grow and learn from the process. As Cooke wisely says, "as a #reviewer, you need to put your critical thinking hat on." Through this mindset, we can build what he calls a "community of practice", where science becomes more robust. However, let’s not forget that this process relies on the #voluntary efforts of reviewers. With our increasingly busy lives, it’s becoming harder to find the time to provide thorough and thoughtful reviews (myself included). We are constantly being flooded with requests to review papers. And as competition in science intensifies, our time becomes even more limited. It’s clear that we need to rethink and improve the peer-review process, and Cooke’s vision of "stirring the waters" is a step in the right direction.
