Week 4 JetZero – a company which is developing an ultra-efficient Blended Wing Body jet with unprecedented performance. It is stated that Blended Wing is the biggest leap in commercial aircraft design in modern times and the best step toward the ultimate goal of zero-carbon emissions aviation. It has 50% lower fuel burn and emissions. JetZero is working with the US Air Force, NASA and the FAA for the launch in 2023. The aircraft will have 100% SAF compatibility, and the internal volume to accommodate zero-carbon hydrogen. Aviation accounts for at least 2% of global CO2 emissions, according to the International Energy Agency, and these emissions have a significant impact on #globalwarming due to their high-altitude release. Pity the aviation industry, with its plethora of negative words. The aviation sector gifts us everything from “jetlag,” “turbulence,” and “sick bag” to “carbon emissions,” “carbon footprint,” and “climate crisis.”   Enter the refreshing concept of “Hydrogen Flight.” It’s a reference to substituting gaseous hydrogen with liquid hydrogen. In test flights, this innovation has been known to double the range of hydrogen-electric passenger aircrafts, bringing us closer to the goal of emissions-free commercial flights.   One complaint about the “Hydrogen Flight,” however: it has the same structure as the term “White Flight,” a reference to white people leaving urban areas. Could it be that “Hydrogen Flight” represents a great idea that’s still on its way to becoming a brilliant buzzword?

I believe sustainable aviation is making significant strides, especially with the advancements in alternatives like eVTOLs, battery-electric flight, and hydrogen power cells. However, sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) stands out to me as the most viable solution for reducing aviation's climate impact. It's encouraging to see industry leaders advocating for increased investment and clearer regulations to support these technologies. For instance, German aviation leaders are currently investigating what 100% SAF framework could look like - what regulations need to be in place, as well as how technology and supply chains will transform. As we navigate this transition, it's clear that there's no single solution. Achieving net-zero emissions in aviation will require a combination of innovative approaches, and I'm optimistic that we're on the right path.
