Being a summer associate in 2021 meant a remote experience for my entire class. My firm sent me a laptop and monitor, and I set up in my law school's library for the summer. There are benefits and drawbacks to any situation, but the biggest downside to that summer was the lack of face-to-face interaction. We did the best we could with the cards we were dealt. I still made some connections, but nothing like I could have had we been in-person. So my advice to summer associates is take advantage of the opportunity to make connections this summer. The relationships you build this summer will prove invaluable when you are navigating associateship post-graduation. Go to all the events. Get people to talk about themselves. And remember their names. #summerassociates #younglawyers #biglaw #connections #networking

I enjoy speaking from the stage, but I LOVE panel and fireside chat formats that invite real audience engagement. Last week, I had the privilege of participating in a panel at the UND School of Law. My biggest takeaway? The future is BRIGHT for the next generation of North Dakota lawyers. 🌟 After a decade of helping business owners solve problems, I can still feel the energy and excitement of boundless opportunities and academic curiosity every time I walk into a law school. It couldn't be more refreshing. #UNDLaw #FutureLawyers #LegalCommuity

Happy Monday! We have new fall interns! You know what that means - we get to brighten the start of each week by introducing you to one of our phenomenal interns! Today we'd love it if you'd join us in giving Eric Han a huge, sunny welcome! "Being able to intern is taking part in actively making changes to the state's legislation. The impact of SLC is significant and impressive, especially in the legislative battles made for minority groups in Florida. When talking to Chelsea about her reason to move to Florida and work in a nonprofit, she responded that Florida is especially vulnerable and in need of minority protections, I agree with the sentiment." MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO WHILE INTERNING WITH SLC: Interacting with clients, understanding the whole process from taking a case to going to court CORE BELIEF: Social justice relies upon the sacrificial and passionate spirit to make changes. FUTURE GOALS: I see my career in three directions, criminal, intellectual property/copyright, and health care law. Apart from being interested in the topics, those are fields that can have profound impact on people whether it be individual or community wide. Making changes, be it legislative or just day to day legal counsel, can really help out those in need. #meettheteam #interns #interning #internpositions #slcinterns #lawinterns #lawfirmlife #lawyerlife #socialjustice #civiljustice #probonolawfirm #floridalawfirm

Treat your summer-associate experience like an improv performance. To the summer associates starting their new positions, keep in mind the rule-of-thumb many improv comics employ: "Yes, And." Walking into my first summer job, I felt like a fish out of water. So many of my law-school peers had studied pre-law in undergrad; had already interned for firms; and/or had family members who practiced. I, however, had a rhetoric degree; some teaching experience; and a firefighter father and a social-worker mother. Although I now realize that my semi-unique background is a strength, as I walked into the first summer-associate meeting back in 2021, I felt like I didn't belong. I was therefore determined to never appear out of place. This mentality didn't entirely hinder my experience. It encouraged me to say "yes" to almost any project an associate or partner offered me, which I always recommend. Exposing yourself to a variety of practice areas and assignments is the point of a law-school summer job; it helps you ascertain what you want your future career to look like. But trying to appear knowledgeable regardless of the situation meant I didn't seek necessary information. I avoided asking whether the assigning attorney knew of helpful resources or seminal cases to provide guidance on the project. I didn't reach out for clarification if I felt that I was missing pertinent facts. I agreed to any project without posing follow-up questions. I said "yes" but dodged the "and." It wasn't until I switched from a yes-man mentality to a yes-and mentality that I truly benefitted from my summer experience. I learned new tips and tricks to expedite the research process, my drafting time shortened, and I started to build more rapport with the firm's attorneys. So, say yes to the projects, even the ones seemingly outside your zone of interest. But follow the "yes" with "and," asking questions to ensure you understand the scope and particulars of the assignment. Being inquisitive doesn't make you amateur, inferior, or unintelligent. It doesn't make you look out of place. It makes you a lawyer. And asking the right questions? Well, that makes you a darn good one. #newlawyer #firstgenlawyer #summerassociate

Are you a 1L with top grades and having a difficult time evaluating the best firm at which to spend your first summer? Whether looking at NALP forms, websites or recruiting puff pieces, many firms sound the same. So how can you tell the difference between a firm that will allow you to develop into a real trial lawyer vs. a firm that will treat you like a billing machine who is stuck in a room doing document review? Ask hard questions!!! For example: 1. How many cases do you actually try a year? 2. How many associates years 1-4 take depositions? 3. How many associates years 1-4 have argued hearings in court for firm clients? 4. How many associates years 1-4 have had a substantive role at trial? 5. How many associates years 1-4 regularly interact with firm clients? If you are a go getter and want to be a lead trial lawyer on complex cases someday, the only way to achieve that is to go to a firm that will give you the opportunity to develop those skills. Take a look at AZA. We are 100% committed to getting our young people on the front lines as quickly as possible. There is no other firm like us. We love going to trial. Come take a look
