New Hope for Spinal Cord Injury Recovery! Researchers at RCSI University of Medicine and Health Sciences have developed a groundbreaking implant that could reshape spinal cord injury treatment. This electroconductive, 3D-printed scaffold is designed to help neurons reconnect by bridging the gap left by injuries and supporting axon regrowth with targeted electrical stimulation. Initial lab results show promising signs, as injured nerve cells grew longer, healthier extensions, potentially paving the way for recovery. This research was guided by insights from individuals living with spinal cord injuries and medical experts, and supported by the Irish Rugby Football Union Charitable Trust.
