Cognitive-appraisal theory of emotions, proposed by James L. Lewis, suggests that emotions are determined by our cognitive evaluations or appraisals of situations. According to this theory, emotions arise when we interpret events based on their relevance to our goals, values, and beliefs. Our appraisals involve assessing the significance of the event, our ability to cope with it, and its implications for our well-being. These cognitive evaluations lead to specific emotional responses. For instance, if we perceive a situation as threatening and beyond our control, we may experience fear or anxiety. Conversely, if we appraise it as beneficial and manageable, we might feel joy or relief. Lewis's theory highlights the role of subjective interpretation in shaping emotional experiences, emphasizing that emotions are not merely reactions to stimuli but are influenced by our cognitive processes. #CognitiveAppraisal #EmotionTheory #JamesLewis #CognitiveEvaluation #AttributionTheory #EmotionalAppraisal #CognitiveProcesses #EmotionalExperience #SubjectiveInterpretation #EmotionResearch

The stim becomes useful for one person - and debilitating for another. There isn't an easy answer - I blogged a few thoughts here:

“If you feel so mad that you want to roar, take a deep breath and count to four.” 😡 While this message is intended for children, it’s a much-needed reminder for adults in the workplace too! 😊 🤷🏽 Conflict and difficult emotions are inevitable when interacting with other humans. (Sorry, people pleasers.) But it's how we manage and regulate our emotions that makes all the difference in our ability to resolve conflict. 🌬 When you find yourself in a situation with heightened emotions, take notice of your breathing. You may be surprised how shallow your natural breath can be when you’re not aware of it. 🧠🦎 Regulating your breathing and emotions helps you move from the part of your brain known as the lizard brain—the basic functioning neural system (brain stem, cerebellum, and basal ganglia)—to the prefrontal cortex. 🛠️ The prefrontal cortex is where we make our best decisions. We can get there by leveraging our tools and avoiding fight-or-flight reactions. -Discover how to avoid lizard brain and more tips for staying cool under pressure in Lesson 4 of "Everybody, Be Cool!" --Lesson 4 helps you understand your conflict style. By understanding your conflict style, you can better manage and resolve conflict when it inevitably shows up. 🤔 📖 "Everybody, Be Cool!" is a personal/professional development book that offers 6 lessons to elevate your workplace vibe. ✨ 💌 Reach out if you're interested in bringing these lessons to your organization. #everybodybecool #conflictresolution Image Credit: Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood
