#ThrowbackThursday to the Australian Aviation Wildlife Hazard Group (AAWHG) Forum in August. The Mastermark team escaped Singapore’s tropical heat to attend this event in Melbourne, Australia. We connected with biologists, airside operators, pilots, and industry experts from around the world, exchanging ideas and learning from diverse perspectives in wildlife hazard management. Be sure to check out the latest article on airportbiologist.com, written by our very own airport biologist Debra Yap, covering the event in detail. #WildlifeManagement #AirportBiologists #AAWHG #AviationSafety #Mastermark #BirdStrike #BirdStrikes

Everyone has to start practicing a new skill some time and somewhere. Best to do it in company with peers, right? When did you last had to learn an essential skill and what helped you to become proficient? #newskills #beginnersunite #bravealbatross
There are no rain delays during seabird flight training. Thousands of young Laysan albatross, or mōlī, simulated flying earlier this month by flapping their wings during a rain shower at Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge. Some even practiced their takeoff steps and an initial hop in preparation for fledging. Each year millions of albatrosses return to the refuge in the northern Pacific Ocean to nest and raise their young. Once fledged, mōlī can travel for great distances and will likely move towards Japan or Alaska, but their known range extends to Mexico, too. USFWS volunteer video: Dan Rapp Video description: thousands of young, black and white seabirds flap their wings during rainfall in preparation for fledging; stationary shot is from a tree-lined path with a rainbow in the distance.

An interesting example of the importance of bird detection and awareness beyond the limits of an airfield : this airport in Colombia had more than 229 bird incidents over a 10 year period, most of them outside the airport, leading some authorities to suggest limiting airport operations during certain periods of the day. Having real-time bird radar information on bird activity surrounding an airfield allows for an optimization of flight operations while maintaining safety standards. The radar data on 24/7 bird activity that is recorded can also be used to analyze avian behaviour patterns and changes, as well as local external factors that are influencing bird activity around an airfield. #flightsafety #birdstrike #airportsafety #birdradar #avianradar

During the darkness of an eclipse, we know that animal behaviours can differ from their original patterns. Understandably, they display patterns typically seen during their nighttime routines. Wildlife may also be more active just before and right after the eclipse; we may hear wildlife calling out more frequently; and we may see nocturnal wildlife during the day. Our team won't be flying our birds during the eclipse and will be extra vigilant for abnormal bird activity taking place before, after and during the eclipse. For education purposes, they will be taking advantage of this rare moment to document any interesting and uncommon wildlife behaviours. Interestingly, it also happens to be mating season, which may give insight into how birds returning from wintering down south will react to the celestial phenomenon.
