I promised few weeks ago to continue contributing to the public health debate in Africa. Based on my extensive experience in Africa, I am proposing a new public health approach in Africa. It is a matter of starting the reflection on the subject so your comments are welcome. A new public health approach in Africa is needed. It should be based on a better research and analytics of public health situations, the use of technological innovations including Artificial Intelligence (AI), with heightened agility between health promotion, prevention and curative approach. It should be the basis for an effective contextualised interventions to reverse trends of some major public health issues like child and maternal mortality. It should provide evidence-based data and information for joint planning with all relevant stakeholders (like Africa CDC) for more synergy, around national authorities. It should also help for a renewed commitment to primary health care with a multisectoral approach and community participation. Finally, it should be based on a public health risks management with a comprehensive “public health surveillance”, training on local major health problems by strong public health agencies or entities, in support to health planning, and interventions monitoring. WHO should probably take the lead as a technical Agency based its comparative advantage in global health. See below 👇🏾 the graph summarising the approach.

🔎 One barrier to the implementation of effective public health interventions that was identified in our recent study was the acute lack of trust among individuals and organizations, particularly when working across sectors, hindering the ability to partner in ways that are equitable and effective. “We aren’t trained to work collaboratively and connect the dots across disciplines and sectors. We only come with a narrow view of what we know. It is so important for all of us in partnerships to be aware, intentional, attentive, and fair,” states Mosa Moshabela, (former) professor of public health and deputy vice-chancellor for research and innovation at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN), in our new insights report. ⚡ This week on the Rural Road to Health we hear from Dr Madeleine Muller who speaks about rural health in South Africa and how RuDASA is supporting rural clinicians. 💡"RuDASA founded in 1996, created as a support network by doctors passionate about rural health. It can be isolating and lonely and this support was important." 💡"The difference between rural health being somewhere where you can thrive or where you are barely holding on with your finger nails is having support available. This has been the real benefit of RuDASA, no one needs to feel they are going at it alone." 💡"About 50% of the doctors joining the onboarding program are new young doctors, however 50% are more established rural doctors who are using this to update their knowledge and connect with colleagues." 💡"Rural Health Alliance launched through Rural Health Advocacy Project, they have joined all the organizations that are passionate about rural health to create one voice for rural health." 💡"To be able to love what you do and thrive in a place you have to feel like it is your calling. Three components to this - feeling that what you are doing makes a difference, feeling competent at what you do, and feeling appreciated." https://lnkd.in/eWngNNCU #RuralHealth #RuralHealthCareers #RuralCommunities #SouthAfrica #RuDASA #RR2H #Mentorship #RuralPolicy #Advocacy
