I’ve actively supported research around Parkinson’s Disease — or PD — over many years. PD is a neurodegenerative disorder set to impact many more people as populations age rapidly. Developing treatments for such diseases and many other scientific challenges requires a rigorous understanding of protein structures, which researchers have tried to predict since the 1970s— a notoriously difficult task. Four years ago, Google DeepMind co-founder and CEO Sir Demis Hassabis and Google DeepMind Director Dr. John Jumper achieved a major breakthrough for many diseases (including PD) with their AI model, #AlphaFold. And this week, their groundbreaking work was awarded with the 2024 The Nobel Prize in Chemistry. By making AlphaFold publicly available, they’ve helped to accelerate the pace of scientific discovery. Over 2 million researchers in 190 countries are already utilizing AlphaFold to unlock new insights into disease mechanisms.
