Seems like a harsh critic towards teachers, but in reality it targets the Academy in general. In my opinion, given that our Scott Sutherland School of Architecture & Built Environment - Robert Gordon University offers such a technical/construction approach to our career, why not create temporary experimental modules that combine disciplines? [And then ask later if RIBA is happy with it] Or everything has to be that rigid? Regarding the Modelmaking topic: Imagine mixing Material Science and Biology with Architecture. Proposed module: - 'Bio-Integrated Design' (Architecture + Science School) Then mix Arts and Crafts with Bio-Integrated Design. Proposed module: - 'Modelmaking in the Digital Age' (Architecture + Gray's School of Art) Exercising on traditional techniques with traditional (and new) materials. I really cannot possibly believe it is that hard. RGU has incredible infrastructure and workshop spaces for this. And I don't mean simply getting us a lecture from a Mycologist, or a Stonemason, which is nice. But actually make workshops that become appendixes of the Studio projects, and let students have a continual sensorial experience across the career. How many students go through Architectural School without having tried traditional model-making techniques? It should be a crime! You would hear sometimes that students might 'not want to get their hands dirty' - But in reality, I suspect Uni doesn't offer attractive model-making-immersive subjects. And they limit themselves to laser-cutting and 3D printing - work that we don't even do ourselves! I think this can be achieved! The more interdisciplinary, the richer the experience and knowledge acquired. What about traditional Scottish crafts? (those linked with architecture - like granite masonry) Why wait for them to be lost? Students are missing out on so much! Marie Airth Silvia Bassanese Jamie Yorkston, MCIAT, FHEA Peter Exley Maria Sanchez Prof Lynn Kilbride I humbly open this thread. And I am happy to discuss further.
An advice to students… and a critique - by Anders Lendager. Anders Lendager presents a critique of traditional architectural education, arguing that it continues to promote outdated practices incompatible with today’s urgent sustainability challenges. During this conversation, Anders encouraged young architects to question established norms and challenge the outdated practices often promoted within architectural education. “We need a radical shift,” he says. ▶️ Anders Lendager is the founder and creative director of Lendager. He participated in our event in Copenhagen this past September, and you can find his full talk on our website under “Archive” https://lnkd.in/dgcasw_6. On November 28th from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm, join KIRKOR’s Director of Sustainability, Lara Gumushdjian, for a thought-provoking seminar on the discoveries, challenges, and opportunities of the specific-based approach to embodied carbon. The current discourse about embodied carbon in architecture is focused on how both design based and broad stroke strategies can decarbonize buildings. Although the WGBC’s Report “Bringing Embodied Carbon Upfront” suggests that both methodologies can reduce carbon, that is only one side of the story. Hosted by the Ontario Association of Architects, this webinar delves into another narrative to expand on what a specification-based strategy means in action, the results of its application, the significant information gaps revealed through our research process, and the “Carbon Disconnect”. Today is #WorldArchitectureDay, and the KAI family is ecstatic to celebrate this year’s theme, “Empowering the Next Generation in Participatory Urban Design.” It’s the perfect opportunity to highlight the role of young architects in urban planning and development! At KAI, our numerous young architects and designers are essential to our success, and their fresh and thoughtful perspectives strengthen our creative process. Their passion for fostering the participatory client engagement and design processes is an asset to every project! Our architects and designers can’t wait to dive into discussions about this year’s big topics: energy efficiency, waste management, sustainable materials, and sustainable mobility. These are more than just buzzwords—they are core to how we design, what we believe in and our philosophy of #TransformingCommunities, making sure every project meets the needs of everyone involved, today and for the future. Let’s build a better tomorrow, together! Whole systems thinking represents a paradigm shift in design philosophy. At its core, it advocates viewing designs not in isolation but as integral parts of a larger ecological and social tapestry. Up now on ADR, Tim McDonald speaks to Belinda McGrath and Chris Bickerton from BVN Architecture about how how whole systems thinking can enhance individual projects and contribute to a broader cultural shift towards sustainability. Useful doesn't need to be ugly. The New European Bauhaus' leitmotiv is "Beautiful, Sustainable, Together". What could this look like in real life? The New European Bauhaus is a policy and funding initiative that was established to translate the European Green Deal into tangible change on the ground and ensure that the green transformation is people-centric, putting #societal needs first. The broad objective of the New European Bauhaus is to revitalise European #neighbourhoods with design for sustainability and inclusion. The purpose of this consultation is to understand the concrete needs on the ground and to gather the most cutting-edge ideas required to transform the built environment. More information below ⬇️

Happy and proud to see this joint work published with our NET4Age-Friendly colleagues as the follow-up of the session we held at #ICAUD2021 - The 4th International Conference on Architecture and Urban Design. Back in 2021 we were reflecting on the theme of the New Normality, which was caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. This global event that affected the world implied some huge reflections in many of the design fields, forcing architects and engineers, urban planners, and designers to rethink many of the consolidated knowledge in the designing approaches. Some of that changes were temporary and went back in a short time; meanwhile, others seem to have become permanent and able to challenge our personal and social mindset, both as designers, as well as end-users. Those changes stress the importance of a rising transdisciplinary interaction among the diverse fields of knowledge, which has affected the whole people real-life realm at a global scale - the perfect context for #SHAFE!!
