Stop Destroying Videogames calls to publishers that are selling videogames that are required to connect through the internet to the game publisher, or "phone home" to function. Very often publishers simply sever the connection necessary for the game to function, proceed to destroy all working copies of the game, and implement extensive measures to prevent the customer from repairing the game in any way. This practice is effectively robbing customers of their purchases and makes restoration impossible. I want to believe 🤞

Videogames are being destroyed! Most video games work indefinitely, but a growing number are designed to stop working as soon as publishers end support. This effectively robs customers, destroys games as an artform, and is unnecessary. The stop destroying games movement seeks to pass new law in the EU to put an end to this practice. The proposal would do the following: - Require video games sold to remain in a working state when support ends. - Require no connections to the publisher after support ends. - Not interfere with any business practices while a game is still being supported. If you are an EU citizen, please sign the Citizens' Initiative! So far 360.000 of the required 1.000.000 signatures have been collected.

Time to save video games. What happens to your purchase after publisher/developer turns off the servers your game relies on? Often, you lose your game for good. Currently, there are no rules ensuring your right to keep playing your games you bought, not rented. European Citizen's Initative asking for these rules has gained over 40% of the required signatures. Do you want to participate?

Got something important to share about the gaming world! 🎮 There's a petition going around in the EU that's catching my eye. It's all about making sure our favorite games don't just... disappear. You know how sometimes publishers decide to drop support for a game? Well, this petition wants to make it a law that they have to leave the games in a playable state. No more "Sorry, servers are shut down forever" nonsense! #Gaming #LeaveGamesPlayable #GamingIndustry #DigitalRights #ConsumerProtection #EULegislation #TechPolicy

If anyone is interested in supporting the European initiative called "Stop Destroying Videogames," they are invited to do so at the address provided below. This initiative calls to require publishers that sell or license videogames to consumers in the European Union (or related features and assets sold for videogames they operate) to leave said videogames in a functional (playable) state. Specifically, the initiative seeks to prevent the remote disabling of videogames by the publishers, before providing reasonable means to continue functioning of said videogames without the involvement from the side of the publisher. The initiative does not seek to acquire ownership of said videogames, associated intellectual rights or monetization rights, neither does it expect the publisher to provide resources for the said videogame once they discontinue it while leaving it in a reasonably functional (playable) state.

May be interesting if you're in the EU: An initiative is calling for publishers selling or licensing videogames in the European Union to ensure that the games remain in a playable state. To be considered by the European Commission, this citizens' initiative requires one million statements of support and minimum thresholds in at least 7 countries. With the spread of always-connected games, it is unfortunately common that some experiences are rendered unplayable after a big publisher decides to close the main server. The biggest recent example was The Crew, which had over 12 million players, but was shut down by its publisher Ubisoft. The game allowed people to drive & race across the US, but now that is gone forever without any ability to experience it again. The Stop Killing Games initiative aims to give players the ability to rebuild these experiences. There's a lot of legal nuances to this, but in the end the petition is aimed at establishing laws that a game purchased at some point should have the ability to stay playable after the publisher closes its servers, rendering it otherwise unplayable. Right now people who have purchased The Crew, for example, can't use the product they paid for, even though it's fully digital. In case you have ever played a game that is now unplayable due to server issues, signing this petition could stop similar things from happening in the future. This petition does not take away any IP rights owned by the publishers, it does not force publishers to support the game forever, it does not force game publishers to give away internal code. The main goal of this petition is to allow a non-profit entity to take over server hosting after the publisher decides to stop running theirs. This would allow fans of games to keep them alive for future generations in a legal & controlled way.

I’d like to encourage everyone to take a moment to explore this important EU initiative on protecting consumer rights over digital assets, especially video games. If you believe in fair ownership of digital purchases, please vote and share this initiative! The EU’s "Stop Destroying Videogames" initiative seeks to ensure that when we buy digital games, we actually own them. No more losing access due to platform changes or shutdowns. This effort is about: - Digital ownership that lasts - Preserving games for future generations - Strengthening consumer rights in the gaming space Even if you don’t own any games, think of this as the first step toward better rights over digital assets as a whole. Spread the word and help support fair digital rights! #ConsumerRights #StopDestroyingVideogames #DigitalOwnership #EUInitiative
