In the season 7 finale, I speak with Will Kingston about the current state of the West and the crises it faces from internal threats that desire to ‘deconstruct’ and tear down the very institutions and values that created the West and have subsequently freed countless numbers of individuals - and countries - internationally. We discuss how we got here, where we might be going, and what things we need to change and retain to ensure a bright future ahead. Thanks, Will! https://lnkd.in/eBFhcu6R

The Fall Edition of FPRI's Orbis is exceptional. It directs our attention to the critical elements essential for defining the direction of American domestic and foreign policy. It starts off with an article by Robert Kaplan on "What Should Be America’s Role in the World?" followed by Andrew's Michta's piece on "America Needs a Grand Strategy" then by "Revisiting Grand Strategy at the Inflection Point" by Nikolas K. Gvosdev etc. The intellectual content is fertile, visionary, and actionable. I highly encourage you to get a copy and read it. https://lnkd.in/e92JpaXG

“The biggest threat to the United States may not be any strategic competitor but rather internal disruption, and our new strategy must account for it.” My essay for FPRI Orbis.

Public executives (mayors, county executives, governors, heads of state) will likely face one or more crises in their time in office. It's important that they can pull together effective response teams to handle public relations, to alert the public of circumstances, and to provide calm and a sense that these situations a being handled in a professional manner. #crises #executives #governance #stategovernment #maryland #keybridgecollapse

Modern day dictators a far cry from the autocracies of old. Modern day strongmen are backed by an elaborate network of financial structures, surveillance, propaganda, and crucially, other autocrats. Anne Applebaum joins David Rothkopf to discuss her newest book Autocracy, Inc., and share how democracies must reconfigure their foreign policy to combat this new threat. https://ow.ly/M4gi50ST7Oo

Very insightful reporting by CNN on the Baltimore bridge incident. What caught my eyes is this: “The bridge is one of 17,468 fracture critical bridges in the US out of 615,000 total bridges” - if knowing this and no remedy was in sight, then disaster like this one is not “natural”, but consequences of human negligence. In today’s technologies infested world, especially the USA, if one cannot fix, in the least have sensible warning apparatus to minimize human losses. It is probably not too difficult to detect a huge moving object like this on a collison course, and automatically stop all traffic, make some noises. Have something like TCAS for planes. Singapore loves being first, but being the first container ship to bring down a bridge, claiming lives, impacting citizens etc, is nothing to be desired. Goes down in history book a lesson: no matter how many times , how often checks are made, Murphy strikes in way we have no preparedness, and the worst happens when the conditions for perfect storm line up. My condolences to the families of lost lives. #musing #baltimore https://lnkd.in/gCAA2e5d
