While existing machine learning models such as deep neural networks can achieve high levels of accuracy, they lack interpretability and explainability. Failure to understand why a model arrived at a decision undermines confidence in its prediction. To overcome this, AI systems must be explainable. NEC Senior Research Scientist Dr. Sascha Saralajew discusses the growing importance of explainable AI (XAI) and human-centric AI in light of the upcoming EU AI Act, which will make it mandatory for AI models to be interpretable in high-risk domains. Did you know that increasing a model’s complexity can sometimes improve performance—after it starts overfitting? 🤔 This surprising phenomenon, called Double Descent, challenges the classic bias-variance tradeoff.
