When I'm hiring, here is the one simple question I always ask that helps me identify if it's a fit or not: What kind of news do you read and how often? Why: I'm looking for someone with well-rounded taste who understands press nuances, which way the outlet leans politically, and what type of stories the outlet does (or does not) like. I need someone who understands that WSJ leans conservative. Politico often wants a scoop. Fast Company loves a listicle. TechCrunch is looking for numbers. Axios is sharp and succinct. The Economist is high brow. And so on. A good PR person should be a voracious consumer of news.
