What problem are you solving? For who? What's the Value? What capabilities do you need to drive that value? What people, systems, and technology do you require to enable that value? Can you see and connect the dots? They are imperfectly connected and oh so important to keep that connected. Good strategy twists and turns these views. Lands on the true constraint. And then pours the energy and resources into solving the problem. And then the flywheel begins to spin. When you catch lightning in a bottle it is pure magic!

Strategy begins with goals, which naturally follow from an entity’s mission. But for practical purposes goals cannot stand in isolation. They are informed by an iterative sensing of the external environment and the organization’s internal capabilities. As much as some may think that everything devolves from goals, the fact is that practical people form goals based on what is feasible, given the environment in which they must operate their own resources and capabilities.

Imperfect > perfect and here's why Often we get hung up on doing things perfectly, we think in the following way Perfect = no mistakes = very difficult = not done I could not understand for a long time what this phenomenon is called It's simple, it's analytical paralysis The state in which we are when, instead of the action itself, we think about how to do the thing perfectly As a result, we do nothing and procrastinate What to do about it? Do it anyway, just get down to business, and you won't notice how you will plunge into a state of flow The main thing is to start✅

How do we do great strategy work? With a mixture of tools and understanding. My current iteration has 3 tools and 4 “layers” of understanding. The tools of strategy: 1) Value driver framework: To drive laser focus on substance 2) Model: To identify key levers and sensitivities 3) Process: Flows naturally from (1) and (2) The “layers” of value: -Comprehend: Sources of value -Calculate: Unit economics and returns on capital. -Create: Problem solving and innovation -Capture: Strategic moves and execution Unpacking these comes next.
