Recently, Joe Leiva, MBA, who leads #CleanPowerGeneration for SoCalGas Research Development & Demonstration (RD&D), had the chance to present some of his #research projects to the Customer Decarbonization Council (CDC). The CDC is a group of SoCalGas #Commercial & #Industrial customers that convene to share their experiences and concerns as we move toward a Net-Zero-Carbon economy in California. Joe highlighted the work that RD&D is supporting with Noble Thermodynamic Systems, Inc., a startup that is developing an Argon-based #combustion cycle that can convert conventional recip engines to zero-NOx and zero-GHG emissions. #energytransition #cleantech #letsgo

A U.S. startup, e1 Air, plans to provide on-demand hydrogen production from methanol at airports by 2025. Initially targeting zero-emission ground vehicles, they aim to fuel electric aircraft as they become available. Using Element 1's technology, e1 Air will produce hydrogen for under $5/kg, significantly cheaper than current market prices. Starting on the U.S. East Coast, with Norfolk, Virginia, as a kickoff point, the company plans to expand to the West Coast. Their portable reformer units will generate hydrogen and electricity, offering flexible, off-grid recharging and refueling solutions. ✈️ Read more: https://lnkd.in/d6nxSE36

Oakland-based startup Molten Industries is working to build it by relying on something that’s cheap and abundant in the US: natural gas. The company has developed a specialized technique to break methane into graphite and hydrogen, the latter of which can be used as a source of clean energy. The effort is funded in part by a $25 million Series A financing round led by Bill Gates’s Breakthrough Energy Ventures (BEV). Molten says its graphite will be cost-competitive with other sources. It’s also banking on the fact that customers will want a lower-emissions synthetic graphite than the kind currently on the market, which is made by treating fossil fuel-based feedstocks using a process that emits methane and air pollutants. The only potential sources of emissions in Molten’s process are from producing the natural gas it uses as feedstock or the grid electricity powering the pyrolysis. Whether there will be demand for the latter in the coming decades remains to be seen, though. Other materials like silicon, lithium and hard carbon may begin to compete with graphite as the default material in battery anodes, according to BloombergNEF. The shift could potentially halve demand by 2035. #starups #batterymanufacturing #evbattery #criticalmaterials #Methane #businessstrategy #supplychainplanning #supplychainmanagement

Interesting article published by Bloomberg UK on a demonstration plant in Singapore, by start-up Equatic.tech, that will remove #carbondioxide from the atmosphere while also producing #hydrogen. Equatic's #technology removes #carbon through #seawater #electrolysis and is already operating at two pilot plants. However, this third and larger demonstration plant will utilise a new, proprietary anode #material within its electrolysers that doesn’t produce #chlorine #gas, typically a harmful by product of producing hydrogen using seawater electrolysis. Read the article below for more on this story, including Equatic's future plans. #netzero #collaboratetoinnovate #TWIIN
