We are witnessing in real-time the complete rewriting of military doctrine. As horrific as the Ukraine-Russian war is, it has also turned into an invaluable guide to how drones and autonomous AI systems will play out in future conflicts. The reality is that manned aircraft are fast becoming obsolete in their traditional roles - surveillance, intelligence gathering, air support and weapons delivery. A typical drone typically costs less than 1/1000th the cost of a manned aircraft, requires far less maintenance and deployment costs, can be replaced quickly, and can often come in well underneath existing anti-aircraft systems. An attack like the one above can prove devastating because not only does it deprive the Russians of munitions, but it also forces them to distribute caches, which ups the complexity costs of delivery - and, with a strong surveillance system, makes it far easier for drones to target delivery caravans.

The Russians have developed a novel drone-warning system in the form of traffic lights. According to Noel Reports, which is typically reliable, these lights, which are connected to drone detectors, are installed on poles on key military routes and have three warning colours: 🟢 No FPV detected 🟡 FPV nearby 🔴 FPV far away I think that they have the warnings the wrong way around and it is much more plausible that the meanings are: 🟢 No FPV detected 🟡 FPV far away 🔴 FPV nearby This warning system can only work for radio-controlled drones. Those that are controlled by fibre-optic cables will not be detected. https://lnkd.in/gjfZHrtZ #ukrainewar #osint #UAV #CUAS

Interested to see how this can translate to the maritime environment, and what it will mean for C-USV, C-UAS, and C-UUV developments.
"8,000 cell phones on a 6ft pole all around Ukraine with a microphone next to them so they can hear the one-way UAV's..they tracked 84/84 and shot down 80 with AAA" - Gen James B Hecker, Commander US Air Forces, Europe The Ukraine doesn't have the budget of the US military, but it's teaching them a thing or two about resourcefulness, and we (Australia) should be paying attention. Forget about IEDs. Drones are the new equalizer, and they're far more accurate and can take out high-value assets deep in 'protected' territory. https://lnkd.in/gMXRP6vj

Evolving Warfare: From Exquisite Manned Aircraft to Affordable & Intelligent Drones “Prior to 2001, the United States was all about very expensive, exquisite, crewed platforms. Fighter jets, helicopters, you name it. Then from 2001 to 2020, we learned to fight with drones. Then from 2020 to now, and for the next 20 years, we're moving toward a world of intelligent, affordable drones." - Brandon Tseng Read more about how this shift is reshaping the battlefield from Axios' Colin Demarest https://lnkd.in/dguSY8vz The greatest victory requires no war. #GreatestVictory #DroneWarfare #UnmannedAircraft #DefenseTech
