ITAPOA PORT (SC) reaches historic mark in June; Porto Itapoa saw its best semester and best month in history in the first half of 2024. A total throughput of 597,338 TEUs was registered, a 12% increase from the 533,423 TEUs seen in the first half of 2023. In June 2024, the terminal recorded 109,889 TEUs, the highest monthly figure ever, surpassing April’s 107,475 TEUs. Felipe Fioravanti Kaufmann, Director of Business Development and Customer Experience at Porto Itapoá attributes this growth to the expanding Asian market. “The entire port logistics system of the southern cluster saw an increase in throughput figures, driven primarily by imports from China,” he noted. Port of Colombo Becomes World's Top Performer in Growth *** The Port of Colombo has achieved landmark recognition by being named the best-performing port globally for the first quarter of 2024 by Alphaliner, a leading information platform for the liner shipping industry, in its latest monthly monitor. This accolade highlights Colombo’s remarkable growth rate of 23.6%, surpassing all other ports worldwide. Notably, the Port of Long Beach in Los Angeles, with a growth rate of 23.3%, secured second place, while the Port of Tanjung Pelepas secured third place with a growth rate of 22.7%. The first half of 2024 has been particularly impressive for the Port of Colombo. Comparing the performance to the same period in 2023, domestic volumes increased by 19.2%, transhipment volumes grew by 9.6%, and total volumes surged by 12.5%. Meanwhile, the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) terminals have been pivotal in driving this outstanding performance. From January to June 2024, the SLPA terminals recorded a 23.6% increase in domestic volumes, a 15.5% rise in transhipment volumes, and a total volume growth of 17.7%. The Port of Colombo, strategically positioned as a key maritime hub in South Asia, boasts several main container terminals, including the Jaya Container Terminal (JCT), Colombo East Container Terminal (CECT), South Asia Gateway Terminal (SAGT), and Colombo International Container Terminal (CICT). These terminals collectively offer substantial capacity to handle increasing cargo volumes efficiently. The JCT and CECT, operated by the SLPA, are equipped with state-of-the-art facilities and advanced technology to ensure smooth and rapid cargo handling. Southeast Asia (SEA) maintains a strong trade momentum in 2024, emerging as a global manufacturing hub, according to a recent report by McKinsey & Company. Vietnam and Indonesia lead this manufacturing shift in SEA, with Malaysia also demonstrating substantial growth. Between 2019 and 2023, Malaysia’s exports increased from US$280 billion to US$370 billion, achieving a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7.6%. This growth has created new opportunities for logistics companies. I recently discussed this with Bernama, highlighting how DP World is supporting regional trade expansion through our strategic partnership with Sabah Ports. Together, we are unlocking the potential of the Sapangar Bay Container Port (SBCP) as a key transshipment hub for the Brunei-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA). Sabah faces high logistics costs, due to factors like its challenging terrain, limited direct shipping line calls, and lower economies of scale. Our efforts to more than double SBCP's container handling capacity by 2026 aims to address these challenges. Furthermore, we are strengthening SBCP’s cold chain storage and transport capabilities, enabling agricultural products to be efficiently processed and exported to international markets, thereby unlocking new growth opportunities. Batam, the Indonesian resort island, has inaugurated its inaugural direct container shipping route to China, anticipated to slash shipping expenses by US$600 per container. This milestone was achieved through the installation of a quay-type container gantry at Batu Ambar Container Port on Batam last year. This advancement obviates the need for transshipment in Singapore, effectively reducing both shipping costs and time. The establishment of this direct link is poised to greatly benefit Batam-based companies, providing them with streamlined access to Chinese markets, with potential expansion to other destinations. This initiative aligns with a broader regional trend of Southeast Asian nations bolstering economic ties with China, evidenced by the development of industrial complexes on Indonesian islands near Singapore, such as Bintan, wherein China's Shandong Nanshan Aluminium holds a partial ownership stake.
