This is a step in the right direction to make swiss companies, which include some of the largest multi national corporations, more sustainable. To expedite their emissions reduction strategy organisations must have a portfolio of carbon removal measures at hand and secure their carbon removal today, already for years to come. After three insightful days at COP29, it's evident that ambition and innovation are abundant, but so are the challenges. Here are some key take aways from Anna Ljungdahl, Senior Investment Director with focus on Climate Tech at Industrifonden. ➡️ Solutions exist but require scalable funding. From renewable energy to circular solutions, the technical innovations needed to meet our climate goals are already here. But without the necessary financing to scale them commercially, progress will remain slow. ➡️ Financing is unevenly distributed. While private investment in climate solutions is growing, it is not reaching all nations equally. This disparity risks delaying global efforts and leaving valuable solutions untapped. ➡️ Political hurdles remain the biggest obstacle. Stronger global frameworks, consistent regulations, and ambitious climate policies are essential. As Al Gore pointed out, "Politicians are themselves a renewable resource" – a hopeful reminder that change is possible with sustained public and business pressure. For Sweden, the stakes are clear. As a small, export-driven country with world-leading sustainable innovations, we have both a responsibility and an opportunity to make a global impact. The Effect of Multinational Enterprises on #ClimateChange: Supply Chain Emissions, Green Technology Transfers, and Corporate Commitments Multinational enterprises (MNEs) provide both a fundamental risk to and an opportunity for climate change mitigation. The climate ambitions of MNEs will affect the environmental performance of countries around the world. As a leading actor, proactive MNEs can impose #sustainability standards or encourage green technology transfers that, in some cases, could affect millions of producers and accelerate the #climatetransition. However, obstructive MNEs may equally hold back any progress to reduce a country’s #emissions via inaction or by actively resisting, obstructing, or lobbying against change. Great report by Victor Steenbergen and Abhishek Saurav, Ph.D. from The World Bank to study the effect of MNEs on climate change. The report reviews the latest available data, conducts new empirical analysis, and summarizes pioneering literature. The report answers four key questions related to the relationship between MNEs and climate change: » What effect do MNEs currently have on climate change, both through their own activities and through the emissions of their broader #supplychains? » How do MNEs shape the potential transfer of #greentech to domestic firms, and how do different types of interactions with MNEs stimulate such technology transfers? » How committed are leading MNEs currently to transitioning their supply chains to #netzero emissions by 2050, and do they have long-, medium-, and short-range strategies to realize this? » What types of policies can influence MNEs’ effects on climate change? Building Credible Net-Zero Transition Plans - How should you start? The need for action on climate change is clearer than ever. In a recent blog by the British Standards Institute (BSI) their recent research shows 71% of people globally view climate change as the most critical issue, with strong support for both organisational (83%) and individual (80%) action to reduce emissions. As we aim to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, credible transition plans are essential. Many businesses, however, find themselves navigating a fragmented “alphabet soup” of frameworks—like the Science-Based Targets Initiative for goal setting and the Greenhouse Gas Protocol for measuring emissions. To streamline and scale net-zero efforts, formal standards are essential. The International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) upcoming Net Zero Standard, based on the 2022 ISO Net Zero Guidelines, will help establish clarity, accountability, and global best practices. The ISO Net Zero Guidelines lay out a comprehensive roadmap for organisations, covering seven key stages: prepare, measure, target, reduce, remove, report, and impact. These guidelines include actionable steps for renewable energy transition, phasing out fossil fuels, and selecting climate-responsible suppliers. They emphasize governance, transparency, and alignment with global best practices. While the Net Zero Guidelines aren’t yet a verifiable standard, they offer a strong foundation to help organisations act decisively on climate today. Taking proactive steps now can de-risk your business, align it with evolving standards, and position you to leverage the vast economic and societal opportunities of the net-zero transition.
