The 2024 State of Public Relations Report by Muck Rack is out and is a must-read for PR and communications professionals. This year’s report is loaded with invaluable info including: - Media Relations is the most common area of focus for PR pros, with content creation and thought leadership rounding out the top 3 - Half of PR pros say LinkedIn is the social media platform they value most, more than X, Instagram, Facebook and TikTok combined. - Surprisingly, only 37% of PR pros say marrying the pitch topic to the journalist's coverage area is the most important factor in securing coverage. MEDIA MONITORING – An Underrated Function of Any PR Firm or Department One of my primary responsibilities at work is monitoring both mainstream and online media to stay informed about topics relevant to our clients and company. While social media makes it easy to catch trending news, many online outlets may overlook important stories that could impact PR strategies or client concerns. To bridge this gap, it’s crucial to go beyond digital platforms by reading newspapers and tuning into various broadcast channels. Although media monitoring is often underestimated, it remains a fundamental pillar of corporate and public relations, ensuring companies are well-prepared and responsive to the media landscape. #Media #PublicRelations #Communications

💥 Most *underrated factor* in media relations? Great timing. Public relations is both art & science. But sometimes it’s just being at the *right place at the right time*. That’s why you can’t treat PR like a light switch. You can’t. It’s not instant-on, like when you suddenly have an announcement to make. PR is cumulative. And media relations is the *aggregate* of your smart outreach efforts. Want traction with earned media? You’ve either gotta be always on. Or you’re way off ✌️ This is the way ✊ #publicrelations #mediarelations #pragency

Social media matters - but it's not a substitute for a public relations program. While 𝘣𝘰𝘵𝘩 social media and public relations help companies get the word out about their news and stories, they aren’t the same. One of social media’s primary roles is distributing a brand’s messages, while one key role of public relations is building credibility through media relations and other initiatives. If a company relies on social media to build credibility without a true PR effort underlying this focus, it could be missing the mark. By connecting the two, you can get so much more out of both. I expand on this in my latest blog post, Why Social Media Isn’t a Substitute for a PR Program. Link in comments. #publicrelations #socialmedia #PRtips

Are public relations always guaranteed success? Nope. Sorry. You’ll often hear people refer to “earned” media. You have to earn the right to get media coverage through a PR campaign, and that’s not just paying an agency. You need newsworthy content. Even if you do get coverage, there is no guarantee that your audience will take action based on PR coverage, particularly if you’re just running one campaign. And finally there is always the chance that someone in your organisation will do something silly and generate negative coverage. Of course you can try to mitigate the impact through PR, but it’s still not guaranteed to work. #pr #publicrelations
