First #tpm24 in the books and it was an absolute blast. Was great seeing old friends and meeting new ones. My biggest takeaway was though we seemingly live in a world of chaos or the “unknown”, many are looking to start or even continue on their journey in diversifying their supply chains. The Swiss Rhine ports and Duisport are introducing an innovative Port Community System (PCS) to improve data exchange with inland shipping. Basel will implement the PCS by the end of 2024 and Duisburg by mid-2025. An update to Day +2 post ILA Port Strike, how are ports returning to normal? On 10/7 and 10/8 combined, we saw a total of 20,880 TEUs discharged from vessels at these ports. When you compare that to over 111,000 TEUs that were picked up out of the port, it's clear that the backlog is beginning to clear - beginning with the containers that were stuck in the ports. What will we see next? Will the number of TEUs unloaded from vessels begin to go up, or will that be spread evenly over the next 2-3 weeks? When you add the fact that Jacksonville and Tampa are both now closed with #Hurricanemilton arriving soon, it is possible that the backlog will take even longer to clear.

A few statistics to recap Day +1 of the ILA Port Strike, thanks to data from VIZION's Tradeview platform: 67,130 TEU = the amount of containers that were picked up out of East Coast and Gulf Coast ports on 10/7 That figure against 12,680 TEU = the amount of containers that were unloaded from vessels into these same ports on 10/7 So all in all, a comforting statistic to see many more containers moving out of the port than moving in. This metric allows for the uniform calculation of shipping volumes across different container sizes, enabling efficient tracking and management of global trade. Here at the Port of New York and New Jersey, TEUs are particularly significant. We moved over 2.8 million loaded TEUs in the first half of 2024, making us the second busiest port in the nation for loaded cargo. Handling millions of TEUs annually requires seamless movement of goods to support businesses and economies both in the region and around the world. We are proud of our important role in the global supply chain.
