🇪🇺And one of those is most definitely the new report on “The Impact of the DSM Directive on EU Artists and Musicians”. Unfortunately, it is clear from the report how ineffective the DSM Directive is and that #musicians need a better level of protection.
👉 🎶Based upon a survey of 9,542 artists from 19 EU countries, it shows that the 2019 DSM Directive has been very far from a success. Conducted by AEPO-ARTIS in collaboration with IAO, this is the largest EU-wide survey ever done on issues related to #performers in the #music industry.

When we as musical artists and performing arts organizations consider our target audiences, it is critical that we clearly understand the value of our product. A key component of our value proposition, as Yo-Yo Ma, the neurologist and author Oliver Sacks and U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy have articulated, is connection: connection to something larger than ourselves, to profound emotions, to each other, and as Jeremy Eichler posits in his acclaimed new book, Times Echo, connection to events, people and places in history. Music creates connection within and between us in a way that few other art forms can. Developing best practices and competencies in order to create and enhance connection is key to attracting, engaging and retaining the audiences we wish to have.
What UK organisations are leading the way in accessible participatory arts for young people aged 11-25? Especially in the realms of disability or inclusive practice in music, digital or performing arts?
Can you wonderful people point me in the direction of some examples of best practices and leading organisations in these fields?
🔉 🎶 New Case Study Alert: "Sounds Better With You" Bristol Beacon 🎶🔉
How do you flip the script and put audiences at the heart of live events? That’s exactly what we did for Bristol Beacon, celebrating the energy and unity of every performance.
We worked with the team to elevate the brand post-reopening. The goal? To reinforce its core values of unity and joy while appealing to a diverse audience from occasional concert-goers to classical music lovers.

On this episode of Arts Engines with Aaron Dworkin, he speaks to Eduardo Delgado, Public Programs Director of the New World Symphony, who shares how the symphony harnesses evolving technology to realize its artistic vision of fostering meaningful connections with the community.
For Eduardo, community engagement isn't just about outreach—it's about building genuine connections in public settings. By collaborating with trusted community leaders, the symphony seeks to bridge the gap and cultivate authentic relationships with the communities they serve. As Eduardo notes, trust is earned, not assumed, and partnerships must be approached with humility and mutual respect.
One shining example of the New World Symphony's commitment to accessibility is the "Wallcast" program. What began as a modest endeavor with concerts on TV screens has blossomed into full-screen projections on building walls, offering free concerts in the park—a testament to their dedication to breaking down barriers and bringing music to all.
But innovation doesn't stop there. Recognizing the need for inclusivity and diversity in their audience, the symphony pioneered the "Mobile Wallcast" initiative. By taking the concert experience to communities, they're ensuring that music transcends physical boundaries and resonates with diverse audiences across Miami.
At its core, this is more than just about music—it's about understanding and embracing the spaces where art breathes and evolves. Partnerships, Eduardo emphasizes, must be reciprocal, honoring the excellence that exists in every corner of our communities.
Yet, we must tread with care and mindfulness. The New World Symphony, like any other organization, must be committed to entering communities where their presence is welcome, ensuring that projects and programs are co-created and mutually beneficial. Change takes time—but the rewards are worth it.
