This integrated approach utilises nutrients, biologicals, and improving plant growth. The end results should result in agronomic, economic, and environmental benefits. Improving nutrient use efficiency and environment impacts of agriculture is not a silver bullet solution. Yet the government and many suppliers are looking for one. Look at the inefficiencies of a process, measure them, and understand how they interlock. It's only then will an integrated solution present itself. In this case we are looking at the most efficient form of nutrients for the paddock, utilising biology to help solubilise nutrients and improve plant parameters, then getting the plant to increase root mass so that it can access all of the inputs more efficiently. Did you know that the wheat genome contains around 17 billion base pairs and more than 100,000 genes? This complexity makes research into this important cereal particularly challenging, yet it also offers a huge opportunity 🌱. Baking wheat 🥖 needs nitrogen to develop the proteins necessary to attain high quality. In conventional farming, this nitrogen is supplied through mineral fertilizers. The aim of plant breeding is to develop nutrient-efficient wheat varieties that deliver high-quality baking results even with a lower protein content or with reduced fertilizer use 🚜. For a research project on the development of sustainable baking wheat varieties, Cem Özdemir, German Federal Minister of Food and Agriculture, formally presented KWS and other project partners with the grant approval.
